Iron nail. A probably rectangular-section shank, tip lost, with an enlarged head of possibly lozenge form. Expanded overall by corrosion, though the mass indicates good survival of a metal core. Accompanying material is mainly Roman in date, though with traces of later material also present. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1750 Length: 50.4mm, Thickness/Width (shank): 9.6mm, Width (at head): 17mm, Weight: 11.58gms

Iron stud fragment. Wrought iron rectangular section shank, much of it lost, offset below a thick [5.5mm] flat circular head; the angular section of the shank is exaggerated by spalling of its metal surface, though the mass may suggest good survival of the metal core thus exposed. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1900 Length: 20.4mm, Diameter (head): 31.1mm, Weight: 26.29gms

Iron possible knife fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. A leaf-shaped fragment of a corroded iron blade, probably from a straight-backed whittle tang knife; the curvature of what is here taken to be the cutting edge may arise from its recurrent sharpening. An interpretation as the tip of a longer spearhead might also be considered, as corrosion makes it uncertain whether the object is of V-section or a lentoid section. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 67.9mm, Width: 26.8mm, Thickness (with corrosion): 7.5mm, Weight: 28.52gms

Iron and lead stud. A thick corroded iron stud of head diameter 21mm passing through a formerly possibly circular fragment of thick [2.5mm] cast lead sheet, now patinated; the stud head is perhaps indented to receive the surrounding lead, and appears triangular in profile with a [now] rounded end. The finder kindly suggests a function as a pot mend, but there is no trace of ceramic. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length (stud): 17.1mm, Diameter (of lead, estimated and in excess of): c.30mm, Weight: 25.83gms

County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron possible cart fitting. A wrought iron ring made by the bending of a flat bar of lentoid form, either around a former, or around a straight member of oval section, and with its narrow ends overlapped to produce a narrower but thicker part of a band. The ring ranges in its band width from 17.2mm where the ends cross, to 30mm at the opposite and widest point, with a maximum thickness of 14mm. The mass may suggest good survival of a metal core below a modest degree of corrosion. The inside of the band is smooth, which may suggest the object was deposited wrapped around its setting, w…

Iron Unidentified Object. A small wrought iron object with a flat ?circular terminal, on a short stem or shank projecting from a larger plate of indeterminate original form. A continuation from that is sharply kinked, and broken after the kink. Corroded and abraded. The finder kindly suggests a function as a fastener, in which case the shank between the two plates may have passed through leather. The angled form also invites a quite different interpretation: as part of the upper part and head of a pin, possibly related to an Iron Age 'swan necked' form. This reporter would welcome bet…

Iron nails. Twenty-one fragments of wrought iron nails and nail shanks. Most exhibit a square section which may arise from the flaking of corrosion as much as from their original form. The heads, where they remain, are often formed by a flattening of the broader end of the shank, though one achieves a T-shape, one retains part of a flat rounded head, two have rounded knob ends, and one has a squared end like a bolt. The poor condition will have arisen from repeated disturbance in the plough-soil, though some may also have been subjected to the burning of wood into which they had been …

Iron possible plane. Rectangular section object which tapers towards one end when viewed in profile, and with an off-centre round or U-shaped hole of diameter c.17mm which retains an angled blade of width c.14mm. The blade is apparently an insert separate from the body of the object and lies against an angled surface on one side, to the rear as a user would view it. The blade was revealed when mud was cleared from the hole in order to record the object. At first viewed as a simple hammer head, this object lacks the functional divisions characteristic of hammers used for carpentry or t…

Iron buckle. Wrought iron rectangular buckle frame with a pin looped around it. The robust construction and material may suggest use with horse harness.
