A white metal plated copper-alloy fragment from an uncertain artefact type and date. The fragment is formed from a single peice of copper-alloy. At one end is a sub-square cross-section, 3.5mm x 3.4mm, which has then been twisted to form a barley-sugar twist design. This twisted section survives to a length of c.18.9mm terminating in an irregular worn break. At the opposite end of the twisted shank the metal flares out and thins to a maximum width of 12.6mm and thickness of 0.7mm, and also ends in an irregular worn break. This zone is bent into a curve but it is uncertain whether t…

A fragment of brown glass weighing 1.22g with a curved length of c.20.0mm. The fragment has a D shaped cross-section and 'nicely' shaped (as described by Dr Kevin Leahy) irregular transverse fractures at each end. The inner surface of the curved length is flatter and the sides and outer curve have a more pronounced convex surface. The width and thickness varies, having a width of 4.7mm and thickness of 2.7mm at one end. The fragment then increases to a maximum width of 6.3mm and thickness of 3.8mm before reducing to a width of 5.2mm and thickness of 3.0mm at the other break. Use of a …

A copper-alloy annular ring. The date of the ring is currently uncertain but the patina may suggest some age and a possible late Iron Age to early Roman date has been suggested. The ring weighs 25.5g, has a diameter of 50.7mm and maximum thickness of 4.0mm. The cross-section is 'D' shaped. The inner edge of the ring has at least two areas of noticable wear resulting in a varied width of the ring's band. This width ranges from 9.8mm to 7.5mm. The ring's external edge, on the curved upper surface, is decorated with closetly set short diagonal lines. The lines have a length of 1.9mm a…

A penannular artefact, ring, of uncertain date or function. This artefact is formed of copper-alloy, has a sub-circular cross section with slightly flattened sides, and weighs 7.46g. At the centre the cross-section has a thickness of 6.1mm and width of 5.6mm. The artefact then tapers to a rounded point of 1.1mm x 0.9mm at the terminals, which have been curved round to form a crescent. The tips of the crescent are separated by a gap of 2.6mm and therefore almost form a circle. The patina suggests some age to this artefact, which is in good condition with just a few small dots of cor…

A fragment of stone, which has divided specialist opinion. It is not possible to confirm that this piece of stone is definitely an artefact and at least one specialist considers it to be a water smoothed pebble of igneous stone, possible glacial erratic pebble from boulder clay deposits, that has a plough struck spall removed from one side. Other specialists feel that this could possibly have been an axehead, probably dating to 2000-1500BC. Alternatively speculation as to whether it is a Palaeolithic handaxe has been muted. Both suggestions agree that it is not possible to determine t…

An unidentified fragment of gilded copper-alloy, possibly a wyvern or cockerel shaped vessel mount probably of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. If the shape is supposed to represent a cockerel or wyvern, part of the breast and wings survive with a break to the upper parts. The central zone, consisting of two strands of metal either side of a tear-drop shaped openwork motif, may represent separated legs in a walking pose which are placed upon the top of an incomplete arch, the lower ends of which now terminate in worn breaks. A fragment of copper-alloy from an unidentified artefact. The fragment seems to probably have one surviving edge and possibly an edge where the extreme rim has broken away but that most survives. The upper surface has been decorated with raised pellets that have been punched through from the reverse. At least two distinct lines of pellets are present. One follows the surviving edge. The other line of pellets runs from the edge across the centre of the surviving fragment. At least one partial pellet is present at an irregular edge that is assumed to be a break. Two lead or lead-alloy styli. Styli "of this type are known to have been in use from the Medieval to post-medieval periods. Therefore, due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnostic features it is not possible to date this object any more closely" see YORYM-732F91. One of the styli is longer and thinner than the other. This one has a length of 50.0mm, a sub-circular cross-section and diameter of 5.6mm. The diameter tapers to a point over c.5.6mm of the length. The point is conical. The stylus is slightly bent at approximately halfway along the length of the artefact. Weigh…

A white metal flattish blob, roughly disc shaped with an irregular and pitted surface on both sides. The type of white metal or metal-alloy is uncertain. This may possibly have once been a coin now incomplete and or melted out of shape, date uncertain, although it is not possible to say this with any certainity. If it was once a coin, both teh obverse and reverse are now completely illegible. This blob weighs 2.88g, measures 16.2mm x 12.3mm and has a thickness of 2.4mm.

The larger fragment has a roughly rectangular shape, weighs 0.31g, has a length of 25.6mm, width of 12.9mm and thickness of 0.1mm. This piece has a number of bends and cracks. A repoussé mark (probably made by raising the metal from the reverse using a punch) decorates this fragment. This mark appears to be the shape of a hand with outstretched fingers. The rest of the fragment is unclear and it is uncertain whether any further decoration was originally present on this fragment. The smaller fragme…
