Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy single loop sub-rectangular buckle frame, pin missing, with forward projecting off-set bar. The dating of these are uncertain. Single loop rectangular buckles can date from c.AD1300 to at least AD1500, see Whitehead R. 2003, pp.26-27, nos.126-133. The recorder suspects that these buckles with forward projecting off-set bars are likely to be for use with horse harness, the dating possibly extending to at least the first half of 20th century AD?  This would give a wide date range of Medieval to the early Modern period. The thinking being that items use…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Rutland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete pair of cast copper-alloy tweezers, most likely dating from sometime between the Roman and Early-Medieval period (c. AD 43-850). The tweezers are formed from a single length of copper-alloy, which has been bent in half to form a sprung loop at the centre. The strip has a rectangular cross-section the corners of the edges adjacent to the inner surface set at 90 degrees and the corners of the edges adjacent to the external surface slightly rounded. In the folded position the loop becomes one end of the object, which weighs 8.16g. Dried mud fills the loop and this mud acc…

Object type: COIN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A sub-circular irregularly shaped disc of copper-alloy that might originally have been a coin, probably of Roman date. If this was a coin and is not of Roman date then it may be of Post-Medieval date. Both sides of the disc are worn and, if originally a coin, now completely illegible. One surface has a slight raised area. The opposite side has a larger raised area that might possible be the remains of an extremely worn head or bust. This artefact weighs 6.27g, has a maximum diameter of 26.0mm, thickness at the edge of c.1.8mm rising to a maximum thickness of 2.7mm. The disc…

A disc of copper-alloy of uncertain function and unknown date. This disc weighs 4.60g, has a diameter of 26.4mm and thickness of 1.0mm. The artefact might be an illegible coin, token or incomplete button etc. There are unclear punch-stamped marks across the centre of one side, possibly numbers or letter characters or simply decorative motifs. The other side of the disc initially appears to be a worn and corroding surface, similar to the opposite side, with no legible detail and definitely no punch-stamped marks. However, closer inspection, aided by magnification or enlarging the image…

A completely illegible copper-alloy disc. Weight is 4.00g, diameter is 23.9mm and thickness is 1.8mm. This might possibly be a Post-Medieval coin, either a halfpenny or farthing depending on when during the Post-Medieval period as the flan sizes of these denominations alter slightly. If this disc was originally a coin the die axis is unknown.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy die of uncertain date. The die weighs 10.69g and is a cube measuring 11.0mm x 11.2mm x 11.2mm. This die is non-regular in that the opposing faces do not total seven. Thus, one is opposite three, two is opposite four, and five is opposite six. These numbered sides are marked with concave single dot depressions that have a white to pale grey colour. The content of the dots may be a whiteish pigment used to better show up the number represented. Alternatively, the dots may contain lead or the entire core of the die may be filled with lead that has been left exposed at the …

A fragment of copper-alloy of unknown date and function. This fragment has a sub-square cross-section, both the width and thickness measuring approximately 3.6mm. It weighs 1.18g and has a curved length of 15.9mm. Both breaks are roughly transverse, one a little more diagonally angled than the other, with fairly unabraded surfaces. Use of a rim chart indicated that this fragment probably represents about 10% of the circumference of a 50.0mm diameter circular loop, if the fragment originally contined to curve on the same arcing alignment, which is uncertain. Discussion: This fragment i…

A fragment of a copper-alloy Post-Medieval buckle frame, probably dating to the Georgian period. The fragment weighs 5.56g and would have been from a two-piece buckle. Only one side of the frame survives. This indicates that the frame was curved, the middle forward projecting and the corners set further back. Thus, the front has a convex curve and the frame creates a concave reverse area. The arm of the frame has a 'D' shaped cross-section with flatter reverse and rounded front, inner and outer edges. At the corners the arm has a width of 4.1mm and thickness of 3.9mm. The middle of th…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unidentified artefact made from copper-alloy of uncertain date. This artefact might possibly be a chisel of Bronze Age date, compare with the items recorded in PAS records: BERK-4008DB, SUR-6751DB, WAW-CEC22C and SUR-E27EB1. This item weighs 2.96g. One end consists of a love-heart shaped end. This has a maximum width of 17.4mm and thickness at the end of 1.4mm. There are two convexly rounded parts to the end that are separated by a concavely round-based V-shaped notch. The love-heart shape tapers towards the middle of the object to a width of 5.3mm, over a length of c.20.6mm. …

One, or more probably two artefacts of uncertain function that most probably date to the 18th century AD or more recent. This item weighs 7.24g and appears to be two squashed loops fixed together, side by side, at one end. The two loops are formed from lengths of copper-alloy that have a 'D' shaped cross-section. The strips maintain a width of 5.1mm and thickness of c.1.7mm. The strips of copper-alloy have transverse concave curves at the mid point along the length bringing the flat surface of each in towards itself. The terminal ends also curve inwards. It is possible, that it w…

A fragment of copper-alloy probably of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. This fragment weighs 5.05g. It measures an incomplete width of 21.0mm with an incomplete height of 21.2mm and maximum thickness of 2.2mm. The rim would have turned outwards slightly at the top of the object. The inner edge is smooth and undecorated. The outer surface has a groove the runs parallel to and is set 4.6mm down from the top of the artefact's rim. Use of a rim chart indicates that the edge of the artefact rim would have had a diameter of approximately 70.0mm and that this fragment accounts for just over 9…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy Jetton of Medieval or Post-Medieval date. Obverse shows an unclear shield. Obverse legend is mostly illegible but is probably fictitious: [...]E[...]V[...]. A rose with central pellet sits within the legend at the left hand corner of the shield. The reverse shows an unclear tressure, probably containing an imperial orb surmounted by a cross. This would make it an Anonymous Nuremberg stock Jetton dating c.AD 1500-1525 (Mitchiner, M. 1988 pp.355-358, nos.897, 992-997). This would mean that the die axis is 8 o'clock. Alternatively the tressure may possibly contain an uncle…
