An incomplete two piece thimble. Only the domed top of the white metal, probably silver, thimble survives but this has been squashed and bent. Not enough of the artefact survives to be able to accurately date it. However, it was formed by the technique of brazing, sheet metal having been curled round and soldered to form a tube and then the separate domed top applied to one end of that tube. Holmes, E. F. 2004, p.2. states that this technique starts to be used to produce brass thimbles in c. AD1450 though few of these date survive to be found. They can be found…

A lead weight or gaming piece of uncertain date. This artefact is sub-circular in shape with a maximum diameter of 23.1mm. The cross-section is sub-oval to sub-rectangular with flattened convex surfaces and rounded convex edges. One surface appears to have been plain, undecorated and relatively flat. However, pitted areas of surface damage are now present. The opposing surface has moulded relief decoration. This decoration is unclear, however study with use of a raking light suggests that the design may be an image of Britannia seated left, with shield leaning against her to the lower…

An unidentified lead or lead-alloy artefact of uncertain date. It is not certain whether this item is complete or a component part of something larger. The object has a sub-circular shape due to slight damage around the circumference. The maximum diameter is 18.3mm and it weighs 10.09g (0.36oz). The edge of the object is convexly curved and has a thickness of 4.6mm. Approximately 3.3mm in from the edge, the disc increases in thickness on both surfaces. This increase in thickness forms a shallow domed circle of c.12.3mm diameter on one side and a slightly more angled, upper corne…

A fragment of copper-alloy probably of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. This fragment weighs 5.05g. It measures an incomplete width of 21.0mm with an incomplete height of 21.2mm and maximum thickness of 2.2mm. The rim would have turned outwards slightly at the top of the object. The inner edge is smooth and undecorated. The outer surface has a groove the runs parallel to and is set 4.6mm down from the top of the artefact's rim. Use of a rim chart indicates that the edge of the artefact rim would have had a diameter of approximately 70.0mm and that this fragment accounts for just over 9…

A large lead weight of uncertain date. This artefact weighs 101.98g (c.3.60oz) is hemispherical in shape with a diameter of 38.3mm and depth of 19.1mm. The change in angle between the domed and flat surfaces is gently rounded edge. None of the surfaces show any obvious decoration. However, at the approximate centre of the flat surface there is the remains of an iron component. This component appears to be a very worn break, which is level with the lead surface. This is likely to be the remains of a suspension loop or hook. The original presence of a suspension attachment is suggestive…

A lead or lead alloy possible strap end or buckle plate of uncertain date. This artefact has a weight of 3.56g, a thickness of 1.58mm, and length of 39.94mm. The artefact seems to have a sub-triangular shape, rather than sub-rectangular with damaged sides at one end, with a maximum width of 17.10 tapering to c.10.70mm. There are three small circular perforations, assumed to be rivet holes. These perforations have a diameter of 1.46mm and seem to have been created from the decorated front surface through to the back as the holes are recessed at the top and slightly narrowed at the back…
