Body sherd from a Roman wheel thrown mortarium dating from c43 to c410 AD. It has many black trituration grits as well as occasional grey and white quartz or quartzite ones. The mortarium is made of a white clay fabric with buff coating internally. However the break profile has stained a paler buff (the exterior is even whiter) so the colour may be a result of some external agency soon after it was originally discarded. Probably an Oxford, or less likely, Severn Valley ware .
Measures 31 x 25 x 8mm, and weighs 7.8g.
