Perhaps a fragment of a Roman Ligula 1st to 4th century AD. It was used for extracting ointment, balsams, and powders from tubes and boxes. The ligula is not, strictly speaking, a surgical instrument, although it was used by physicians for applying medicament to affected areas on the body. The object is bent over to a point before tapering, flattening and terminating. Possibly used by a surgeon or for mixing paint or cosmetics. Similar to LANCUM-BC7F31. The object could as an alternative be a later Medieval brooch pin. The diameter is 80mm, thickness 4mm and the weight is 8g.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire

Fragment of copper alloy Romano-British bow and fan tail brooch. Only a small part of the fan decoration remains part of the triangular crenallation. This brooch would probably have had tubular wings. The bow of the brooch would probably have been rectangular in plan, narrow with a curve. The foot would have been straight and fan shaped and ended with a raised rib across the very bottom. The fragment is 10mm long, 12mm wide, 6mm thick and weighs 1.30g. Brooches of this type date from the 1st to 2nd century. This group is believed by Hattatt to be early in the series of forms and proba…

Fragment of Early Roman copper alloy possibly Hod Hill Aucissa derivative brooch. The bow is intact but the catchplate and hinge pin are missing. The hinge for the pin was formed by the rolling of the head back onto itself with a verticle slot for the pin. There is some moulded decoration across the breadth of the head and possibly a stamp or inscription. The bow has a central ridge decorated with 2 bands down its length. The bow curves out in a similar manner to an aucissa brooch. There is a small knop to either side at the top of the bow. The fragment is 30mm long, 15mm wide, 8mm thi…

Fragment of Early Roman copper alloy Dolphin brooch, 1st century AD. See Hattat 2000 (A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattat's Ancient Brooches, Oxbow Books page 298, no 356 and 352). The bow is 'D' shaped and the sprung pin is missing. The spring would have been held within two cylindrical lugs on an axis bar. The wings are circular in section and have a consistent diameter. The front of each wing is decorated with two engraved lines which are angled from the top of the bow to the bottom edge of each wing, and curve round the wing. The bow arches away from the wings and then curves back…

An incomplete fragment of a copper alloy ‘dragonesque’ style plate brooch of early Roman date (75-175 AD). Only the central body part of the brooch survives. It is 37mm in length, 12mm wide and and it weighs 6.92gm. The brooch is very corroded, but some traces of blue enamel survive.
