An incomplete cast copper alloy rat tail spoon of Roman date. This type of spoon is identifiable by the typical hook at the junction where the bowl begins. The handle of the spoon is square in section and has a sharp upward bend at one end. At the opposite end the handle bends downwards at a right angle to begin the characteristic hook which is completed by a second, outward bend which extends to form the bowl of the spoon. Probable Roman or Romano British copper alloy brooch, possibly a Colchester derivative or Trumpet Head derivative. The head is sub semi-circuar in plan and appears to have originally accommodated a hinged pin and it's axis bar. These are both absent as is any catchplate that may have been originally present. Early Roman or Romano British copper alloy brooch. Probably a Colchester derivitave of some sort. It shares similarities with type 17 in Hattatt's 'Ancient And Romano-British Brooches' (fig.20, p.65). It appears undecorated. The sprung pin, spring, and axis bar, are absent. The catchplate andbase of a probable spring top retaining loop are present in part. Probably dates from c43 to c60 AD. The length is 39mm, the width is 23mm and the weight 5.30g. Similar brooches on the database include KENT-2CBC29, LEIC-A9FF82, PAS-1AE64C, and SF-9D0A41.

The emperor is Delmatius, who reigned as Caesar for only two years until Constantine I's death, between 335-337 AD. He was expunged by Constantine's sons in the purges following their father's death in 337. This coin comes from Lugdunum, c. 337 AD. It is very rare.
