Object type: PLATE ARMOUR
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Sheet copper alloy riveted plate, possibly part of a fitting for Roman laminated body armour, such as a cuirass or baldric strap fitting. The six intact rivets are domed on the upper face and flat and flush with the plate on the back. The plate has been folded since deposition and is quite corroded so that any decoration has disappeared. The domes of the rivets have corroded into flat lentoid heads that are about 6 to 7 mm in diameter, but the original more circular edge of the heads can still be made out in most cases. Crummy (1983) illustrates similar plates with domed rivets tha…

Object type: FINGER RING

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy finger ring with a broken hoop that has one arm bent outwards but would have originally been oval in profile and D-shaped in section, with projecting convex altering to concave shoulders which rise to a high oval bezel. The edge of the setting has mostly corroded away and the stone is missing and may have been made of glass or carnelian, as all that remains is an oval patch of black material that would have held the stone in the setting. The stone would likely have had intaglio decoration. Middleton (1998) illustrates a similar ring with recessed shoulders and an oval …

Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Late Iron Age or Roman (c.300 BC - AD 410) translucent cobalt blue annular glass wound bead, with a wavy or scrabble pattern, which was probably originally white glass. The pattern is in poor condition and has degraded, possibly due to poor workmanship when annealing the bead. This can occur when the heat is not constant or through cooling the bead too quickly when removed from the furnace. The surface of the bead is damaged. Guido (1978) illustrates a similar bead of this style in plate 1, no.10d and classifies it as Group 5A on page 14. While handmade beads with trailed decorat…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman brooch with just the lower part of the bow, the foot and part of the catchplate remaining. The front of the bow is decorated with diamond-shaped recesses in a linear chain which still hold the remains of red and blue enamel. There is a rivet hole at the foot, before it terminates to a point, which would have held an everted pedestal to complete the foot. This style of decoration on this thin and delicate bow and the everted foot suggests that it is part of an enamelled headstud brooch which dates from the 2nd century AD. Hattatt (2000) illustra…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative, Dolphin brooch with just the lower bow, foot and part of the catchplate remaining and missing the main part of the bow, head, wings and pin. The fragment has the remains of worn zig-zag, leaf-like mouldings either side of a pair of central grooves running the length of the bow. The two grooves form the border either side of a moulded cabled pattern down the centre of the bow, which may have originally been enamelled, as on other examples recorded. The brooch looks like a worn version of a similar brooch found in Lanlivery wh…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman hinged Dolphin-type brooch, missing the wings, pin and catchplate. There is iron corrosion product within the hollow back of the head of the brooch suggesting that the hinge and pin were made of iron. The head of the brooch has a flat recessed central square which then steps into a lozenge-shape crest which tapers into a triangular neck that is defined by oblique grooves on either side. There are also incised oblique lines on the lower neck and stamped roundels in transverse rows across the raised lozenge, but the surface is also pitted from corrosio…

Cast copper alloy pelta-shaped mount with looped terminal with integral pointed lug that is 4 mm long at the back of the terminal. The mount is in the form of an expanded crescent or collar with moulded borders and radiating oblique lines that run between the borders. Between these transverse ridges there are trapezoidal cells that would originally have held enamel. Inside this crescent is a pelta-shaped section that still retains some of its red enamel inlay and arcs into a point that almost touches the terminal, creating two areas of crescentic openwork.
