A Late Iron Age or Roman (c.300 BC - AD 410) translucent cobalt blue annular glass wound bead, with a wavy or scrabble pattern, which was probably originally white glass. The pattern is in poor condition and has degraded, possibly due to poor workmanship when annealing the bead. This can occur when the heat is not constant or through cooling the bead too quickly when removed from the furnace. The surface of the bead is damaged. Guido (1978) illustrates a similar bead of this style in plate 1, no.10d and classifies it as Group 5A on page 14. While handmade beads with trailed decorat…

Glass donut-shaped bead, circular in plan and ovoid in profile, with a circular perforation that is 3 mm in diameter. The upper face of he bead, around the aperture, and the lower face are not quite parallel, suggesting that the bead was finished off by hand. The bead is cobalt blue in colour and slighly translucent. This colour is commonly used in later glass beads, but this type and the way it was produced suggests that it could be Romano-British or Medieval in date. Crummy (1983) illustrates two similar small dark blue glass beads on page 33, fig.34, nos.562 & 628, which are dat…

Incomplete glass bead, ovoid in shape and in section as it has been split in half so that the central perforation can be seen to be very straight-sided and cylindrical in shape. The perforation is 6.9 mm long and 1.6 mm in diameter. The bead is cobalt blue in colour and opaque. Its shape and colour are typical of beads from the Roman and post-Roman period. Quinnell (2004) illustrates similar blue glass beads found at Trethurgy on page 92, fig.52, nos.19 & 21, which are dated from AD 325-375 and post AD 500 respectively.

Glass bead that is black in colour and slightly translucent, with swirling patterns within the glass, but worn and scratched on the surface. The bead is circular in plan and asymmetrically ovoid in profile, with a cylindrical central perforation and a lip on the edge of the hole, which shows that the molten glass would have been twisted and rolled around a central rod during its manufacture. Crummy (1983) illustrates a similar short barrel bead on page 33, Fig.34, No.628, which is dated from the post-Roman period. Roman beads in stratified local contexts are rare, but examples of simi…

Glass cobalt blue bead, worn and pitted with mottled colouration within the glass. The bead is circular in plan and ovoid in profile, with a cylindrical central perforation and a lip on the edge of the hole, which shows that the molten glass would have been twisted and rolled around a central rod during its manufacture. Crummy (1983) illustrates a similar short oblate bead on page 33, Fig.34, No.562, which is dated from the post-Roman period. Roman beads in stratified local contexts are rare, but examples of blue glass beads have been found at Trethurgy, St. Austell and are illustrate…

Glass annular bead of light, blue-green translucent glass, sub-circular in plan and ovoid in profile, with a large uneven aperture of about 5 mm in diameter that appears to have been cut away by hand, or wrapped around a rod that would not have been quite cylindrical. Similar to Roman beads recorded in HESH-1CE5C1 and BUC-89BC47. Crummy (1983) illustrates similar examples of light green / blue glass beads excavated from the Roman period levels at Colchester on page 32, Fig.33, Nos.549 & 553, which are dated from the mid 1st century to the late 4th century . Locally, a similarly …

Glass bead, exposed to the sun and weather so that it is now light blue, but was probably a cobalt blue colour originally. The bead is circular in plan and section and spherical in profile, with a narrowing central perforation and a lip on the edge of the hole, which shows that the molten glass would have been twisted and rolled around a central rod during its manufacture. Crummy (1983) illustrates a similar short oblate bead on page 33, Fig.34, No.617, which is dated from the 3rd to the 4th century AD. Roman beads in stratified local contexts are rare, but examples of blue glass…

Spherical, annular, cobalt blue glass bead with a trailed white glass paste pattern and a central hole with a diameter of 4 mm. White opaque glass threads have been coiled around the blue glass bead and then marvered. The white threads were then pulled upwards to create this wave pattern. The bead compares in size and shape to an example in Crummy (1983) on page 33, Fig.34, No.617, in colour to No.562, and in style of decoration to Fig.33, Nos.543 & 546 which both have marvered trails and are dated to the Roman period. Roman beads in stratified local contexts are r…
