Biconical lead steelyard weight. The remains of an iron bar running through from the apex of the weight to the base can be seen, but this is now heavily erroded. Several lines have been engraved into the weight, but none of these forms legible writing. The weight is whitish-brown in colour and fairly erroded. A number of similar globular and biconical examples have already been recorded on the database from Suffolk, including: SF-F6662B, SF-F66CC2, SF-F6878E, SF-03C88C. Crummy (1983, 101, no.2510) illustrates an example from Colchester of similar construction, but slightly differen…

A complete late Roman cast copper alloy zoomorphic buckle of late 4th to mid 5th century date. Both the buckle frame and plate remain intact, but the pin has been lost. The frame is 25.5mm in width at its widest point. It is 'D' shaped, with two projections, shaped like horse heads, extending from the outer edge of the curved side. The hinge bar has a circular section. The reverse of the curved side is flat and unadorned, whilst the upper side is highly decorated. The internal edges have a thin raised ridge running from the strap bar as far as the horse head protrusions. Each has a …

Small shard of black burnished ware type pottery probably from the rim of a Roman flanged bowl. The rim is roughly triangular in section and decorated with a groove on the outside. Small fragment of the base of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture, dating to the mid 1st to 2nd century AD. The fragment consists of a portion of the small base upon which the vessel would have stood, along with part of the base itself. Given the small size of the fragment it is difficult to determine what kind of vessel it came from. The fabric of the vessel is mid orange colour with reddish-orange slip. Fragment of the base of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture. Around a quarter of the base of the vessel survives, this rises slightly towards the centre of the upper face. On what would have been the inside of the vessel are what appears to be the letter M or W - the makers mark. There may have been other letters, though these are now illegible. The small size of the fragment makes it had to determine the shape of the original vessel. However, given its shape it may possibly belong to a plate or dish of Dragendorff form 15 to 31, dating to the mid 1st to m…

Small decorated fragment of the body of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture, dating to the mid first to second century AD. The decoration consists of a raised curve, with a smaller curve above it to the right, followed by a strip containing an ovolo design above this. The shallow curve of the fragment suggests it probably once belonged to a bowel or similar vessel, but the form of this is difficult to determine. Mid orange colour with reddish-orange slip. Fragment of a copper alloy Roman buckle plate. Originally this appears to have consisted of two sheets of metal, folded in half to form two plates between which a strap could have been secured. The folded part would have been slotted to hold the buckle frame in place, with a central slot to allow the hinged pin to operate. A portion of this folded part remains and a small part of one of the plates. However, the rest is missing. The fold is semi-circular and decorated with parallel grooved lines.
