A nearly complete copper alloy enamelled Roman symmetrical plate brooch. The brooch is lozenge shaped with four circular lugs on the edge, one at each corner. Each lug has two concentric grooves around its centre. The central lozenge section has one large central cell of the same shape, filled with 16 small blocks of millefiori. Such blocks were formed by cutting slices from a composite glass rod, formed by arranging coloured rods of glass in a pattern, heating them enough to fuse and then stretching them into long thin, composite rods. The pattern seen on this brooch comprises altern…

An incomplete late Roman buckle plate. The plate is long and rectangular. The longer sides of the front are decorated with two parallel grooves containing small, closely packed transverse lines giving a ribbed effect. In the centre are five and a half lozenges set longitudinally down the centre of the plate, all but the half-lozenge containing engraved cross-hatched lines; the half-lozenge is filled with more concentric half-lozenge lines. Each lozenge has a ring-and-dot motif at top and bottom, and there is a ring-and-dot motif either side of each join between lozenges. At the end…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy pin. The remaining stem is slightly curved. It bends abruptly at the top before joining a ring shaped head, leading this to project forward slightly. The head has four sub-oval indentations arranged at regular intervals around one face. The metal has a shiny green patina and survives in good condition. The object is complete apart from a missing section at the base of the stem. It is fairly similar in design, if not in decoration, to those shown in fig.10 of 'Roman metal hair pins from Southern Britain' (Cool 1990). Cool (ibid., p.165) attributes a fou…

A probable snake form bracelet fragment of Roman date. The fragment consists of the end one arm of the bracelet, both sides of which are decorated with short interweaving diagonal lines, presumably to indicate a snake's scales. This is very slightly curved, may well have been bent out of shape following deposition. The terminal is a flattened sub-oval shape with no further detailing and is placed at a slight angle to the arm. Johns (1996, p.109) writes that the type of snake form bracelet that became fashionable in Roman Britain was 'a very stylized version of the penannular form with…

The sherd has a dark outer surface and a pinky-buff inner surface, with a dark grey inner core with buff margins. There is perhaps limited traces of burnishing on the outer surface, but this is very abraded. Three sherds of Roman grey ware, all from fairly thin-walled vessels. Fine grained, sandy, soft fabric. This could have orginate from a local source or may have been imported from elsewhere. Many local production sites probably remain undiscovered and so it is difficult to date the sherds precisely (see Woodward et al. 1993, p.281 for discussion). 1. Length: 47.53mm, Width: 26.94mm, Thickness: 10.86mm, weight: 12.35g Base sherd. Grey inner surface, with a pinky-buff core and outer surface. Tempered with plentiful fine mica, frequent grey grog (

Nine sherds of Roman greyware vessels. All are a similar shade of mid-grey. Although some have slightly lighter grey inner and outer surfaces and the largest sherd has an oxidised pinky-buff outer face. All are very abraded, but where there is evidence of original fracture lines these are irregular. They all have a fairly coarse fabric though some sherds are slightly more gritty in texture than others. These gritty ones are tempered with plentiful rounded and sub-angular clear and white quartz (

A handle from a Roman New Forest Ware vessel. The fabric appears to fall into Fulford type 1c, which has a hard, slightly sandy, granular texture, with a reddish-yellow core and reddish-brown slip (Tyres 1996, p.171). The shard is also tempered with plentiful fine mica, and occasional larger pieces of red iron ore (<2mm). The handle probably came from a flagon or similar vessel. New Forest Wares were in production from c. AD 260-370 and were distributed mainly in the South-West (ibid. p.173). Length: 26.08mm, Width: 15.25mm, Thickness: 8.62mm, Weight: 3.62g
