A copper alloy dolphin brooch probably Roman (see Hattat's Visual Guide Fig 157 - 160 for similar). The one wing which remains is tubular, but semi-circular in cross-section with a ridge at the end. The second wing has been lost. The head of the brooch rises up to form a typical dolphin profile, and then tapers down forming the bow. The bow has broken at the bottom. The head is relatively bulky (see also Mackreth Plates 46 - 48 for similar).
