A copper alloy dolphin brooch probably Roman (see Hattat's Visual Guide Fig 157 - 160 for similar). The one wing which remains is tubular, but semi-circular in cross-section with a ridge at the end. The second wing has been lost. The head of the brooch rises up to form a typical dolphin profile, and then tapers down forming the bow. The bow has broken at the bottom. The head is relatively bulky (see also Mackreth Plates 46 - 48 for similar). Description: An incomplete lead alloy salt pan of Roman date. The object consists of two halves of a salt pan of flattened lead alloy each of which are rectangular in plan with a folded rectangular rim along two edges. The remaining two edges on each half appear to have been cut in what appears to be a deliberate way. One half of the object (fragment 1) is marked with three circles in a triangular formation next to the numerals XXX. These are likely to be a measure of capacity. A cast lead alloy pendant of uncertain date. The object is oval in plan and the upper surface is decorated with ten punched ring-and-dot motifs. Each motif has a central raised dot (or pellet) surrounded by a raised ring within a circular depression. At the top of the object is a small rectangular perforation though which the object may have been suspended. However it may also be a punch mark or a nail hole. The perforation measures 3mm in width and is 1mm thick allowing only a small attachment such as a leather thong to pass though. It may be a deliberate hole for attachment but c…

An incomplete copper alloy late Iron Age to early Roman button and loop fastener, dating from c.AD 1-200, Wild Class 3. The fastener is sub-triangular in plan with one end terminating in a rounded point while the opposite end is straight. In the centre of the object is a circular boss surrounded by a raised cordon. Either side of the central boss is a sub oval, or 'tear shaped' perforation. A small fragment of blue enamel is visible on the rectangular end of the body of the object. A copper alloy mount dating to the Roman period, probably in the form of Medusa. The object is oval in plan, convex to the front and concave to the rear. The front of the object is worn with worn lentoid eyes and a flattened nose. The mouth has been damaged and worn and is no longer visible. The hair is designed to represent the snakes which made up Medusa's hair. The face of the object has a dark olive green patina while the reverse has a smooth pea green patina. Treasure Case 2017 T524: Description: An incomplete Roman silver-gilt bow brooch of Polden Hill type. The surviving part comprises the wings and upper part of the bow, with housing for the spring (now missing). A fragment of a lead alloy trumpet brooch of Roman date. The fragment is D-shaped in cross-section. Only the centre of the bow survives which is decorated with a petalled oval waste moulding (acanthus button). The moulding has four petals above and below the central horizontal ridge. Above and below the waste moulding are three horizontal moulded ridges. The upper bow extends 16mm above the centre of the moulding while the leg of the brooch also descends 16mm below the moulding. Copper alloy Colchester derivative brooch dating to the Roman period. The bow is comma-shaped in profile, D-shaped in section, and tapers to a rounded foot. The wings are semi-cylindrical. The bow rises from the top of the wings sweeping in an arc towards the foot. The brooch is undecorated. To the rear of the object the spring, pin and catchplate are missing. The object has a mid-green patina and is in good condition. Dimensions: 27mm in length, 19mm in width, 7.4g.

A silver republian denarius of the moneyer L. Flaminius Cilo, struck in Rome between 109-108BC. The obverse depicts the helmeted goddess 'Roma', and includes a small 'x' beneath her chin, signifying that the coin was a relatively early form of the denarius coinage, as it is known that at this time (3-2nd century BC), the value equivalent of a denarius was about 10 asses, and so was stamped to represent this. A copper alloy Roman brooch of trumpet Pannonian type dating from the 2nd to early 3rd century. The object has an expanded trumpet like head from which the bow extends downwards tapering in width. In the centre of the bow is a stepped central moulding consisting of horizontal parallel ridges which widen in width towards the lower ridge. The foot of the brooch curves forwards at the base of the bow and is decorated with two horizontal ridged mouldings.
