A complete wrought iron nail of Roman date. The iron T-shaped in profile and has a long, tapering square-sectioned shank. One arm of the head cross bar is longer than the other. Similar nails have been illustrated by Manning (1974), and this would fit into his Class 1b. A similar object was recovered from a secure archaeological context dating to the fourth century AD (see BERK-D3B958).

A near-complete iron tool of possible Late Iron Age or Roman date. The object has an uneven crescentic blade with rounded shoulders. The open socket of the tool has a rivet hole for securing the handle in place, and iron corrosion adheres to the area around the blade and socket junction. The blade has been worn down to its current shape through use. This tool may be an axe or adze but also possibly a hoe. The open socket is characteristic of pre-medieval tools. A near complete and well preserved cast copper alloy Roman Hod Hill style brooch, dating to the period AD 63-65. The brooch has tubular wings with an iron axis bar to take the hinged pin. The pin is missing and iron corrosion surrounds the wings. The bow of the brooch has sets of three horizontal ribs above and below the side lugs. Between the terminals of the side lugs is a rectangular panel with vertical linear decoration of degraded enamel. An incomplete copper alloy Roman Trumpet derivative brooch of the Wroxeter type, dating to the period AD 75-200. The fragment comprises the foot with intact catch plate and a short length of the bow. The bow foot is decorated with moulded design of two inverted 'L's which taper to a bilobed foot. The overall appearance is devolved zoomorphic. For an identical brooch see Hattatt (2007:331) no. 982.

A complete pair of copper-alloy tweezers of the Roman or Early Medieval date (c. AD 43-800). The tweezers are formed from a single rectangular sectioned band of copper-alloy which has been bent in half, creating a sprung loop one end. It consists of two arms extending from the loop, both of which flare outwards just above the rounded terminals. There is no visible decoration.

An incomplete cast copper alloy mount of Roman or medieval date. The pin-head is cylindrical with undecorated disc ends and a body grooved lengthwise around its outside, giving the object a barrel-like appearance. Centred on the underside of the head is the remains of an iron tang or shank, almost square in section. The patina of the object suggests a Roman or medieval date, and the iron tang/shank could indicate that this is a fitting for a knife (knife cap) or possibly a furniture mount. Parallels have been hard to find, only one similar object appeared in searches on this database…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Colchester brooch type with double pieced lug, Harlow type, dating to the 1st century AD. The brooch is almost complete, missing only its pin. The wings of the brooch are C-shaped in profile with a double lug in the centre of the arms and head to take the coiled spring wire. A complete copper alloy finger ring of late Roman date c. AD 350-450. The finger has been made from a cut-down bracelet, also originally of late Roman date. The band is penannular and one terminal tapers compared to the other - frequently cut-down bracelets seem to use one terminal end. The band is worn and there is no decoration.
