An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman plate brooch, dating to the period c.AD 200-350. The brooch is oval in plan with a raised oval rim around a recessed cell at its centre, which would have held a stone or coloured glass insert. There is traces of gilding around the outer rim but the brooch is too worn to discern any incised or moulded decoration around this area. The reverse of the brooch retains the hooked catchplate and most of the single lug for the pin. Around these two elements is the remains of a white metal (silver) coating. Plate brooches usually date to the second and thi…

A silver Roman Republican denarius of Mark Antony, dating to 32-31 BC (Reece Period 1) and struck by a travelling mint. The reverse depicts a legionary eagle between two standards and the legend LEG XI, for Legio 11. To the obverse is a galley with the legend ANT [AVG] above and III.VIR.R.P[C] below. There is a circular indentation, similar to a counter-stamp, on the obverse below the galley. It is unclear what this is for or when it was done. These coins were struck by Mark Antony for the use of his fleet and legions when he was preparing for the struggle with Octavius, whic…

A worn and clipped copper alloy Roman nummus (AE3) from the House of Valentinian, dating to the period AD 364-375 (Reece period 19), SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE reverse type. Uncertain mint. Interestingly, this coin has been clipped to honour the outline profile of the bust of the emperor. The reason for this is unknown and there is no evidence of any mounts or attachments on the reverse to convert it into a brooch or other decorative object. This cutting out of the bust has been noted on other coins, including another of this same issue (see BERK-474AB2). See CAM-EC24C6 for a denarius of…
