Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and incomplete cast copper alloy object of probably Roman date. The object is robust with a round-point terminal which extends into a circular sectioned shaft with faceted sides; at the opposing end, which is now broken, is a deep V-shaped groove or socket set slightly off-centre to the main shaft. Here the shaft is septagonal. The object appears to have even wear over the shaft so it seems unlikely that shaft was inserted into a wooden or bone handle. No direct parallels can be found - this object may be a tool of some kind but is a yet unidentified.

An incomplete cast copper alloy figurine or mount of a cockerel of Roman date. The figurine is well moulded with incised feather detail evident on the crest, upper body and wings. The beak points slightly downwards and the eyes are large and exaggerated. The tail feathers are not depicted in detail rather as just a curving, tapering plume. The cockerel has no feet; an incomplete tapered rectangular-sectioned shaft protrudes from the underside of the bird. The cross section of pins are usually circular unlike this example, which is why this object is interpreted as a figurine or mount.…

A copper alloy spiral ring of uncertain date or function. The ring is formed from a rod of copper alloy, circular in cross section, decreasing in size as it turns through three loops to form a hollow loop that tapers in width. There appears to be moulded decoration on the fatter end of the road, feathering or linear effect lines that could be representative of the scales of a snake, as is sometimes seen on 'snake rings' of the Roman period. Rings such as this have been interpreted as finger rings, however, due to the small size of this ring it is likely that it had another func…

A worn and deliberately cut-half copper alloy Roman dupondius or as, possibly of Antoninus Pius or Marcus Aurelius, but most of the bust is missing so the identification is uncertain. Part of a standing figure can be seen on the reverse. The patina on the coin is mostly even, even on the core where the cut has exposed it - this suggests that the coin was cut in two in antiquitiy.
