Object type: WINDOW GLASS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small fragment of glass, possibly window glass. The fragment is roughly triangular in form, pale blue/green in colour, containing some air bubbles and with one surface coarser/rougher than the other. The longest (upper?) edge of the fragment is complete and at one end it begins to curve slightly before terminating in old breaks. It measures 14.65mm in length, 26.13mm in width, 1.56mm in thickness, and 0.91g in weight. This is a possible fragment of window glass or similar. Its find spot might indicate a Roman date, although a later date range cannot be ruled out entirely.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead weight of possible Early-Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is rectangular in plan, trapezoidal in section and with faceted exterior edges. Both front and back faces appear to be undecorated, however the preservation of the weight means that any decoration which may have once existed is no-longer visible. It measures 16.84mm in length, 12.88mm in width, 3.54mm in thickness, and weighs 5.99g. The lack of defined decorative motifs renders the dating of this object uncertain, although associated finds might indicate a date range from any period between the Roman and Post-Medie…

A cast lead weight of possible Early-Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is square in plan and rectangular in section with a flat back and slightly domed front face. The front face has two deeply incised parallel grooves, possibly simply decoration but perhaps also a mark of weight ot value. It measures 14.52mm in length, 14.22mm in width, 6.71mm in thickness, and weighs 9.55g. This weight is largely undiagnostic and may date to any point from the Roman through Post-Medieval periods.

A cast lead weight, possibly a spindle whorl, of Roman or later date. It is conical in form with a central circular perforation and eight unevenly spaced vertical ribs positioned around its circumference. This weight measures 35.57mm in diameter, 15.44mm in height and weighs 76.06g. It may perhaps have been used as a spindle whorl and could date to any point from the Roman period onwards.

A cast lead weight, probably a spindle whorl, of Roman or later date. It is conical in form with flat back face and slightly flattened top with central circular aperture. There are no traces of any decorative elements. It measures 18.84mm in diameter, 11.69mm in height/thickness, and weighs 19.56g. A spherical lead weight, probably a steelyard weight, of Roman or later date. It has worn surfaces and a small semi-circular suspension loop, probably made of iron, at the top. The weight is 32.44mm in diameter and weighs 158.012g. It is difficult to give a precise date for this example. It is possible that the weight is Roman in date, although its shape might indicate a later date in the Medieval or Post-medieval periods. See Bailey, 1995: pp. 31 for a similar, undated, spherical example.

A sub-conical shaped lead weight that is poorly cast with uneven and splaying edges and an offcentred sub-oval shaped perforation. Presumably this was intended as a spindle whorl or similar. An incomplete lead weight, probably a steelyard weight of possible Roman date. In its current state the object is oval shaped in plan and conical in profile with flattened top and bottom faces and a central circular perforation. Extending from the top of the perforation, and visible at the bottom of the perforation, are two corroded lengths of iron that probably originally formed a suspension loop that is new incomplete due to old breaks. The base of the object has quite a sharp finish that may indicate it is only one half of a larger biconical weight, the remainder now missing due to …

A cast lead steelyard weight of possible Roman date. It is pear-shaped in form with a slightly flattened base and tapering towards a flattened point at the top. The remains of an iron suspension loop can just be identified in the centre of the top surface, but this is now mostly missing due to old breaks. The surfaces are pitted and have much damage probably caused whilst in the ground. It measures 67.25mm in length, 52.42mm in maximum diameter, and weighs g. This weight is of probable Roman date, although similar examples were also used in the Medieval period and so a later date canno…

A large cast lead steelyard weight of Roman or later date. It is conical in form with a flat circular base and has the remains of an iron suspension loop visible at the top of the cone. The exterior surfaces appear slightly faceted as if smoothed off during production, and there is evidence of post-depositional damage. The weight measures 53.93mm in diameter at base, 38.29mm in height, and weighs 367g. This weight might date as early as the Roman period, although might equally be of Medieval or later date.

A cast copper-alloy weight or counter of possible Roman date. It is flat, circular in form and has three evenly spaced circular perforations. The object is slightly unevenly cast with one side being thicker than the other and it has a pale green patina. It measures 11.97mm in diameter, 3.83mm in thickness, and weighs 2.26g. This is probably a small weight or counter. A similar example, with four punched dots on each side, is noted from London (LON-FFBCD1), and two small disc shaped copper-alloy weights are published from Colchester (Crummy, 1983: nos. 2511-2512). This might indicat…
