Object type: WINDOW GLASS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small fragment of glass, possibly window glass. The fragment is roughly triangular in form, pale blue/green in colour, containing some air bubbles and with one surface coarser/rougher than the other. The longest (upper?) edge of the fragment is complete and at one end it begins to curve slightly before terminating in old breaks. It measures 14.65mm in length, 26.13mm in width, 1.56mm in thickness, and 0.91g in weight. This is a possible fragment of window glass or similar. Its find spot might indicate a Roman date, although a later date range cannot be ruled out entirely.

A small rim sherd from a glass vessel of possible Roman date. Part of the flattened rim, possibly from a jar or bottle with an original rim diameter of c.21mm is preserved, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The glass is dark blue in colour with air bubbles visible in the interior. It measures 19.02mm in width, 7.58mm in height, 3.96mm in thickness and 0.74g in weight. Given its findspot, this sherd is likely to be from a Roman blue glass vessel, c.43-410 AD.

A rim sherd from a glass vessel of Roman date. The fragment is formed from a pale blue/green glass that has multiple inclusions and air bubbles. The rim itself is roughly oval sectioned, out-turned and flattened, with a short length of the neck preserved but terminating in both directions in old breaks. The entire object measures 34.48mm in length, 15.53mm in width, 10.51mm in height, 6.26mm in thickness at rim, approximately 50mm in rim diameter, and 6.63g in weight. This is a rim sherd from a glass vessel of Roman date, perhaps from a bottle similar to examples from Colchester (e.…

A rim sherd from a glass vessel of Roman date. The fragment is formed from a pale blue/green glass that has multiple inclusions and air bubbles. The rim itself is roughly oval sectioned, out-turned, folded and flattened, with a short length of the neck preserved but terminating in both directions in old breaks. Beneath the rim is the top of an incomplete ribbon handle that is folded and attached to the top of the neck and underside of the rim. This terminates in old breaks just below the rim, its precise form uncertain. The entire object measures 35.14mm in width, 16.60mm in length, 1…

A blue/green glass dolphin shaped handle from a Roman small globular flask. Half of the handle and part of the wall of the vessel survive, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The handle is D-shaped in section and applied to the shoulder of the vessel, trailed up the neck and bent out and down to give the dolphin-like form and creating a neat circular aperture. The glass itself has several dark blue/black inclusions and air bubbles, as well as vertical streaks on the outer face of the handle where it has been trailed and bent downwards. This fragment measures 22.…

A blue/green glass sherd from the body of a glass vessel, preserving the stump of a handle that is circular in section. The fragment measures 24.03mm in height, 14.18mm in width, 14.80mm in thickness, the handle has a diameter of 8.55mm, and the entire object weighs 4.70g. Given the associated finds from this location this glass sherd is of probable Roman date, c.43-410 AD.

A blue glass bead of possible Roman date. It is circular in shape with a small central circular perforation. The bead measures 7.59mm in diameter, 3.41mm in thickness, and weighs 0.30g. It was found whilst metal detecting on a site known to produce Roman finds. Similar beads recorded from Suffolk (see for example SF-EB5C13, SF-9FA3C3, SF-608C77 and SF-E1AE71) and one example from Roman Colchester (Crummy, 1983: no. 614) suggest a probable Roman date for this example.

A small fragment of moulded pale blue/green glass that is perhaps Roman in date. It is possibly from close to the rim of a glass vessel, although not enough of the vessel survives to state precisely whether it is Roman or later in date. The sherd measures 20.47mm in width, 13.38mm in height, 2.81mm in thickness, and weighs 1.21g.
