Simple one piece-brooch, Nauheim-derivative type with a flat broadly ovoid bow, undecorated, made of sheet metal, which narrows to a wire that forms a simple loop and the pin, both of circular cross-section. The catchplate is missing. Discussion: the brooch is so small it seems unlikely to have had much practical use, suggesting it was produced for symbolic reasons. For discussion of brooches of this type see Bayley & Butcher 2004, 146-8. For a parallel, see Hattatt 1987, no. 737. Date: late first century BC to early first century AD Wt.: 1.42g L.: 26.2mm W.: 6.6mm …

A fragment of a silver spoon, almost certainly of Roman date. The fragment consists of part of the handle, of circular cross-section, in the form of unevenly twisted thick wire - the end of the handle is broken and missing. At the bowl end, the handle is square in section, and has a solid, quarter-circle offset with rat's tail onto a fragment of the bowl, probably oval or pear-shaped originally, but now almost entirely missing. The surface gives the appearance of having been heavily cleaned. Discussion: it is possible that the fragment has been deliberately created, i.e. that th…

Description: The brooch, which has lost its pin, is formed by a penannular ring of circular section; diameter, 20 mm. The two ends are folded back on top of the ring, then shaped into simple animal head terminals with concave sides and chevron incisions forming the snout; at the neck end is a transverse groove and a pair of lateral nicks. The backs of the terminals, which slightly overlap due to compression, are plain and flat. The top and sides of the hoop are decorated towards the terminals with zones of transverse ribbing. The group consists of two silver Roman Republican coins of a denomination known as denarii and one denarius of Tiberius, four silver Iron Age staters and eight copper alloy sestertii and dupondii from the reign of Claudius I (AD 41-54). The Iron Age staters are uninscribed types usually associated with the Durotriges, a people thought to have inhabited an area covering the modern county of Dorset, parts of Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire and the Isle of Wight during the late Iron Age. They were produced in the mid to late first century BC (about 60 to 20 BC). In terms of date, the e…

Although, members of the Warmington Historical Society have been investigating parts of this site, which contains Roman features, the finder was not detecting in the same area as the Society were excavating. Found with the aid of a metal detector, 26.9.06 (Treasure reference 2006 T467), with a further ten coins found during subsequent archaeological investigation by Archaeology South East (Treasure case number 2008 T285). This group consists of 4653 coins made in the fourth century AD from AD 330-350. Each coin, generally known today as a nummus,is predominantly copper-alloy with a tiny admixture of silver. Circumstances of Find Found by Messrs D. Philips and B. Plason with the aid of a metal detector about 70cm below the field surface, 1.12.06. The initial discovery of the coins was made in and around the remains of their plough damaged pottery container. A small excavation was then made by the Herts. and Beds. FLO, Julian Watters. This excavation yielded more coins and pottery. Watters concluded that the coins had been deposited on the same spot as a Roman rubbish pit or midden; however, due to the fact that the find had already been removed prior to investigation a stratigraphica…

A Roman gold finger-ring with solid stepped rectangular bezel. The hoop, distorted and incomplete, comprises an oval-sectioned, ribbed rod, smooth on the outer face. At the shoulders it is fused to the base of the bezel and enclosed by three pellets. The bezel has a short two-line inscription incised on its lightly-cambered surface. Wear, also apparent on the hoop and shoulders, has partially erased the inscription, which appears to read _ IV / _ II, perhaps [V]IV(AS) (ie. 'Long life to you .....') followed by an abbreviated personal name. The ring form is paralleled by an exampl…

A slightly tapering tube with coiled wire decoration attached to it near the wider end and about two-thirds of the way down. The wider end is closed by a flat plate, secured from coming out by the ends of the tube being bent over. The plate now sits at an angle, with one side pushed slightly down the tube, but it would appear that it originally sat square to the end of the tube. Attached to the plate is a small loop, of fairly flat cross-section. The tube is bent slightly to one side towards its narrower end, the edges of which are folded in. It seems likely that it is broken at this …

A Roman silver small keeled finger-ring with narrow D-shaped hoop. The simply-engraved triangular shoulders have damaged notched edges and frame a flat circular bezel, which is neatly engraved with the letters ToT. Rings with this inscription on their bezel are distinctive to Roman Britain and have been found in some numbers in Lincolnshire. The inscription is regarded as an abbreviation of the name of the Celtic god Toutatis (or Totatis), who was often identified with the Roman god Mars. The ring is Henig's Type VIII. A near-identical ring was found in archaeological excavations i…

Complete silver adjustable bracelet made from an undecorated wire, 3mm in diameter at the centre tapering towards the terminals, which overlap and twist around the hoop to fasten the bracelet. Commonly found made out of copper alloy, this form of expanding bracelet is a well-known type dating to the later 4th century (Barber & Bowsher, 2000, p199, B461.3-4; Clarke, 1979, p304, Type C1a). Precious metal examples are far less common, although a gold example is known from York (BM Guide, 1951, fig. 7, no. 10), and a silver example from London (Wheeler, 1930, Pl. XL, 2) Bibliography…

A Roman penannular silver bracelet fragment, comprising part of the slender oval-sectioned hoop, now distorted, and one terminal. The terminal is in the form of a stylised snake-head with neatly-incised jaws, round eyes and skull-markings and hatched sides representing the scaled body. Snake jewellery, with its important symbolism, was popular over a long period, in Roman Britain as in other provinces of the Roman Empire. The slender, relatively realistic form of this snake bracelet is comparable to an example from Stonea, Cambs. (R. Jackson and T.W. Potter Excavations at Stonea, C…
