A Roman copper alloy mount, possibly from a vessel, in the form of a sitting bird. The bird is three dimensional and has a plump pointed oval body which rises to a narrow neck and small head. The head is worn and no features are visible. A slender tapering tail of circular section extends vertically from the back and then turns 90 degrees to the rear. An incomplete integral loop extends below. There are many of these so-called bird rings on the database, which have variously been described as furniture fittings or vessel mounts. See for example NLM-8A6096, LIN-F1A832 and LIN-BE7512…

A Romano-British copper-alloy mount in the form of a bust of Minerva. Minerva wears a Corinthian helmet with diagonally cut notches on the crest. Curls of hair flow out beneath the helmet along the forehead. The facial features are worn, but feint lines illustrating the eyes, nose, and mouth are visible. The reverse of the upper chest is concave, and in the centre is possibly the remains of a broken stud or shank. Iron corrosion adheres to both sides of the base. The mount is similar to another from Ribchester, Lancashire (LANCUM-B19766).

A Roman copper-alloy mount. The mount is a circular convex disc with a raised rim and inner circle. It has a circular hole in the centre. The mount is similar to one found in Crummy 1983, no.4037, given an early Roman date in the 1st century. Crummy states this may be military in origin, though it is difficult to determine. It is also similar to another, with a central hole, which is suggested to be a jangle from a harness (Crummy 1983, no. 4618). The present item seems more robust that the examples illustrated by Crummy. It may, therefore, be a box mount rather than a harness item.

A Roman belt plate. The plate has a medium-brown patina, suggesting that it is brass. The plate is rectangular and has a rivet hole in each corner. One rivet survives; this has a shank of circular section, with a flattened head at both ends. A small square washer is fixed between the plate and the flat-head on the reverse. The face of the plate is slightly convex, and is divided into ten rectangular cells. Each cell contains an intricate repeated design of millefiori enamel. Nine of the cells contain a grid of squares, comprised in a grid of 4 x 6. The lower left cell (as seen in the …

A Roman copper alloy phalera (a mount from legionary armour or cavalry harness) dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD. The object is fashioned from a sheet of copper-alloy. It is roughly circular and has six rivet holes evenly spaced around the perimeter. The centre is domed, having been pressed outwards from the reverse. Although worn, the domed area appears to depict a bust. Similar objects from Roman military sites appear to depict the Emperor Hadrian (e.g. HAMP-94270F). Phalerae of the 1st and 2nd century AD are more unusual than the later 2nd/ early 3rd century types, which were…

A Roman copper alloy anthropomorphic mount, dating to the period c.AD 43-200. The mount comprises a woman's head shown facing fowards. She wears a hat or headpiece. This has a thick band, above which it tapers and curves backwards and upwards. The top of the hat or helmet is missing. possibly representing a maenad. As a follower of Bacchus, the object as a mount from a vessel handle would be appropriate. Her hair parts in the centre just below the band, and then flows down to either side covering the ears. The eyes are shown in provincial style, being pointed oval. The nose is rather …

A complete cast copper alloy furniture or casket mount, of probable Roman dating (AD43 to AD410). The mount is vase-shaped with a flat circular base. In profile it tapers from base to terminal, and comprises four reels of progressively smaller diameter from base to terminal. The sections between the reels are concave. The centre is hollow and is filled with the remains of a corroded iron rivet. The terminal has a circular indentation in the middle, which is filled with copper corrosion. A Roman copper-alloy mount in the form of a horse's head, which emerges from a flat backplate. The head is shown in three dimensions, and details are shown by a combination of fine mouldings and incised lines. The neck is pointed oval in section and tapers to the head. The head is shown semi-naturalistically. It has pointed ears, behind both of which is a pair of incised crescents, presumably representing folds in the skin. The horse has thick brow-ridges, below which is a pointed oval eye with a recessed pellet centre. The snout is elongated and terminates with two recessed pellets r…

A Roman copper-alloy object in the form of cockerel. The bird is shown in three dimensions. It has a thin, narrow head with a flat, rounded panel of copper alloy extending from the base of the chin to the neck. It is unclear whether this is intentional, or if it is waste that has not been trimmed off. The body flares to a pointed oval base. The tail is represented by a large, curved panel of copper alloy rising from the pointed end. The underside of the bird is hollow, and an integrla bar extends from side to side. An incomplete rectangular stub of copper alloy extends from the base o…

A Roman copper-alloy mount (for example SUR-9A4B76), or possibly the head from a lock-bolt (for example, SUR-AED102). The mount has a concave circular head, from the centre of which projects a small dome. The shank below is narrowed to the waist, and then expands to the base, thus making it vase-shaped in section. A square apeture is located on the base.

A Roman copper-alloy mount. The mount takes the form of a sub-rectangular plate with outward bowing sides. From the centre of this plate projects an oval-sectioned moulding with a vertical groove dividing in half its convex upper surface. A concavity on the reverse of the mount corresponds with this projection.
