An assemblage of Roman pottery collected unsystematically during metal detecting. The assemblage comprises 98 sherds weighing a total of 1473g. The colour-coated wares are Nene-Valley types; while some might be Nene Valley proper, others could well be be Lincoln products as splitting these fabrics is challenging. The colour-coated ware…

A lion-head spout from a Roman samian mortarium. The head is depicted in three dimension, and has a mane of wavey locks of hair on the top and sides. The eyes are pointed oval and the mouth is open and hollow. The snout is damaged. Lion-head spouts are a common feature of Form 45 mortaria (see Webster 1996: 55-56). According to Webster, "This type first appears in the late 2nd century (c. AD 170 or later). East Gaulish examples were imported up to the mid 3rd century" (p. 56). Several examples are recorded on the PAS database; LIN-118284, BH-12D2A1, LON-187598, LON-02FE97.

A rim sherd of Roman samian ware jar containing graffito on the exterior. While the sherd is undoubtedly of Roman date, the date at which the graffito was added is unclear. Two lines of inscription run across the surface of the object. The first runs diagonally upwards from the left wall and reads [L]EG IIII. The second line begins under the [III] of the first line, and runs horizontally to the right wall. This reads INVI [ ].
