An inscribed Roman stone stilus sharpener / whetstone. The stone is fine-grained green (slate?). The piece is 46.7mm long, 21.7mm wide and 8.2mm deep. There is a deep groove along the upper face where the stilus would be sharpened. The Latin inscription on the front face is: [M?]ΛNDΛCVS MATTΛVI which probably translates as 'Mandacus(?), son of Mattavus'. It is a possible Celtic / British name and patronym.

Triangular fragment of a Roman tile c. 65mm by 80mm by 90mm, and 31mm thick, stamped with a mark for Legio II [Augusta] - CFG II [ ] = LEG II [ ]. It weighs 150g. It is known that by the late 4th century Legio II Augusta was based at Richborough (Rutupiae) in Kent (information from the Notitia Dignitatum). This tile, found in close proximity to Richborough does support the literary evidence. However, The Notitia does not suggest when the legion moved to Richborough from Wales. A significant number of coins struck by Carausius (AD 286-93) for Legio II Augusta were found in the Richb…

Copper alloy coin or medallion with a diameter of 36mm and a weight of 13.23g. This piece is incredibly worn. On the obverse there is a faint trace of a bust right which might have the features of Carausius (AD 286-93) - sadly this cannot be captured on a photograph. Although this might seem far-fetched, the British Museum has a medallion of Carausius which measures 38mm in diameter and weighs 13.21g. The BM piece is made of orichalcum (brass) and appears to have been overstruck on an earlier dupondius of the first of second centuries AD. It is just possible that this new find is s…

A ceramic / terracotta coin mould for the production of forgeries of Roman coins. It is probably the mould for the reverse of a Severan period denarius (c. AD 193-235), although it is possible that it is for the reverse of a radiate (c. 260-96) - it is not for a 4th century nummus. The mould is cylindrical. The coin impression is just below centre. Above it are two impressions, apparently for lugs from the mould for the obverse of the coin. Between the impressions is a funelled channel to allow the flow of molten metal into the mould. The mould is of considerable size, a good dea…

Copper-alloy piece 11.48mm in diameter and 1.14g in weight. One side is convex, the other flat. It is possible that it is blank for a Roman period contemporary copy of a coin, prepared by dropping molten metal on to the flat surface. However, it was never struck. If it is a blank, it probably dates to c. AD 275-402.
