A fragment of a cast copper alloy figurine depicting the god Mercury, dating to the Roman period (c. 43- 410 AD). The fragment consists only of the head of the figurine, ending in a break across the neck.
The head is wearing a winged petasos cap, the wings are asymmetrical and curve out from the front of the cap. The cap extends down the back of the head to the nape. Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Polden Hill type, cf Mackreth 2011, CD PH 4.i1. Plate 47, and of 120-240 AD.
The cast brooch is heavily-corroded and incomplete missing the leg and pin and is a comparatively small example (with a surviving length of 26.0mm. a surviving depth of 13.3mm and a weight of 2.9g). The copper alloy spring is secured between lateral lugs, around a copper alloy axis bar. The chord is tensioned by a hook at the head. Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Aesica type and of 1st century AD date
The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring and is corroded (with a length of 40.1mm, a surviving depth of 16.6mm and a weight of 16.0g). The brooch is of closed form and is cast in one piece but employing a separate spring mechanism, with the missing axis bar secured through a central lug behind the head (21.2mm wide).
