Object type: MINIATURE OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: South Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy object, possibly a miniature Roman votive axe.
The object has a curved blade that has a forward angled tilt and a rounded lower half. One side (the top edge of the axe) is gently concave for the first half and leads to a straight shaft for the final half. The other side of the axe is slightly shorter because of the angle of the blade and has a more pronounced concave edge that again leads to a straight shaft. The rear of the axe appears to be truncated.

An incomplete Roman copper alloy Colchester derivative, possible double pierced lug, Harlow type brooch dating to 43-100 AD. A heavily worn and corroded copper alloy anthropomorphic mount dating to the Roman period, AD 43 - 410, in the form of a human face. The object is oval in plan, convex at the front and concave at the rear. Hair is shown on the top of the head and bordering the sides of the face to the chin, but unfortunately all finer detail had been removed by corrosion leaving a heavily pitted surface. An inlayed silver band runs around the top of the head and is split in the middle with each end stopping in a roundel terminal (only one side of which survives) a third silver line runs perpendicular f…

A copper alloy Roman zoomorphic figure possibly dating to c. 43-300 AD. The figure is possibly a hair pin head or the head of a stirring rod. The animal stands on hollow narrow waisted and cylindrical pedestal that is decorated with a series of latitudinal grooves; through the centre of which would have been inserted an iron rod. A flat bar surmounting the pedestal form the base on which the beast stands. The legs have slightly expanded paws with simple pilla…
