The coin probably dates to early in Carausius' reign, c. AD 287. It is a new variety. The end of the obverse legend is blundered, either representing F AG or AVG. Mintmark probably S P // - ; Probably Mint of London. RIC V, pt 2 - . Although the exergue is unclear, the style of the coin does appear to be of the S P series; it is certainly an unpublished coin. This coin will feature in Sam Moorhead's new edition of RIC.

This reverse type is known on a coin from the Little Orme's Head Hoard (Numismatic Chronicle 1956, no. 346). It is either a very early coin engraved by an inexperienced engraver or a contemporary copy.

RESTI[T]VT SAECV, reverse type shows Carausius standing left, holding globe and spear, being crowned by Victory, standing left, holding palm over left shoulder. No mint mark. RIC V, pt 2, p. 540, cf. no. 969, Four coins of this type with reverse legend RESTIT SAECVL are recording for the new RIC for Carausius. One is in the Hunter Cabinet in Glasgow (no. 157). It is just possible that there is an obscured L after SAECV, but this is still a new variant nevertheless.
