Fragment of a late Roman copper alloy buckle of Hawkes and Dunning's Type IIa. The fragment consists of one side of the bow which was decorated with two confronted dophins. The animal's head is modelled in a simplified form, there is a short crest marked by an incised, longitudinal line. Along the length of the crest is series of transverse lines. The eye is represented by an inclsed ring: there are traces of what might be a further ring further back on the head. An indentation shows the dolphin's forehead. Fragment of a late Roman copper alloy buckle of Hawkes and Dunning's Type IIa. The fragment consists of one side of the bow which was decorated with two confronted dophins (one survives). While the animal's crest is strongly defined with incised lines other details, such as the eye, are not shown. Notches mark the the dolphin's curved forehead and the under-side of the jaw. Condition good. Length 18.9mm, Width 18.9mm, Thickness 2.4mm, Mass 2.31g.

Cast copper alloy plate, rectangular with two protruding lugs at one end, the other end rounded and possible truncated. Incised on its face is a 'swash N' motif made up of four conjoined petals with two rings at the points where they join. The lower part of the plate bears two columns of incised arcs set either side of a central line. On the back of the plate are two projecting pins, 3.8mm diameter x 3.8mm long. Fragment of a buckle of Hawkes and Dunning's Type IIa originally decorated with a pair of confronted dolphins only one of which survives. The animal's open mouth can be seen as can its crest/fin. Originally the two dolphins were joined only at their heads, their bifurcated tails were unattached. Below the surviving tail is the remains of a transverse loop by which the buckle was attached to its plate.
