Cast copper-alloy swan's head handle from a vessel. The eyes are depicted as is the serrated beak and there are traces of elaborate grooving over the crown and around the eyes to simulate plumage. Surfaces pitted. Another interpretation for this form of object is as a cart fitting to which the reins were tied when the vehicle was stationary. An example depicteding both an eagle's head and a swan's head was found at Cirencester (Webster 1958, 74 no. 37 fig. 3). A number of these objects have been found and all are linked with 1st century military sites.
