A very unusual and well-preserved Gilded disc brooch with a carved glass central setting. The copper-alloy circular disc is divided into two zones by bold concentric ribs. The central royal blue glass setting is flat-topped and bears the boldly executed cast impression of a bird with raised wings and hooked beak which is most likely to represent an eagle. The outer ring has surface accretions, but it is very likely to have been decorated with ā€˜Sā€™-shaped motifs. The back surface has a thin white metal coating. A Roman copper alloy Colchester derivative, Dolphin brooch dating from the late 1st century. The wings are cylindrical and have two grooves on either side and writhen terminal knobs. The grooves and the decoration on the terminals does not extend to the back. There are buttresses on either side at the junction of the bow and wings. The gently curving bow tapers to a plain foot.
