An unidentified cast copper-alloy shaft-like object, possibly Roman, with an oval cross-section, tapering at both ends and with a definite thickening at the middle. The surface is corroded and covered in a layer of verdigris. Both ends appear to terminate in breaks, and one is distinctly curved, though whether this was the object's original state or post deposition damage is uncertain. The central, thickened part has two busts in shallow relief, positioned on opposite sides of the shaft. Both appear to have a bowl-like haircut and to be wearing fabric at their shoulders; one in pre…

A Roman copper alloy brooch of probably headstud type, of 1st-2nd century date, with decorative enamel still attached to the central spine. The pin and all articulation points are now missing, and the brooch itself is covered in verdigris. This example is similar to a more complete specimen found on the database under NARC-D633ED">NARC-D633ED and also LVPL-68DC1A, though this latter example is more intricate in the cut and positioning of the enamel.

A complete Roman gilded copper-alloy disc brooch, probably of about AD 200-350. The brooch is circular in plan, measuring 26mm in diameter, with a central boss made of a dark gemlike material. The boss is conical and measures 5mm in diameter and 9mm in height. The base of the boss is raised 1.8mm above the surrounding surface, giving a total thickness of 19mm for the entire object. A slightly raised rim forms the outer circumference of the brooch and enough gilding survives to recognise a repetitive pattern of "S" shapes just inside this edge. On the reverse, there is some white …

A Roman period cast copper-alloy figurine in the form of a sphinx. The main body is leonine, with a human female head that, despite corrosion, has a recognisable 'bun' hairstyle. The front paws are raised, and one wing of a symmetrical pair remains on the left, the other indicated by a broken stump. The rear to the body has suggested, rather than defined, hindlimbs, and a tail represented by 'A' shaped hatches running vertically along a raised ridge. An incomplete Roman brooch of trumpet type (probably 1st century BC-1st century AD), the stem and the vast majority of the catchplate missing. The flared head of the brooch appears to have been decorated with enamels, some of which remain in a pair of symmetrical curvilinear grooves that circle at the flare and snake down to the collar/mid-bow knob. The knob consists of three raised loops with two concave loops between them, the outer loops being textured or decorated in a way now rendered indistinct by corrosion. The larger central loop is decorated with a relief pattern of rais…

A cast copper-alloy uniface miniature Roman dagger, probably intended as a votive object. The object appears complete from blade to pommel, but is slightly distorted and forms a slow curve to the right when viewed from the upper, detailed side. The miniaturisation of objects is a common occurence in the Romano-British world, although Keirnan (2009) questions whether this shrinking takes place for economic reasons (of not wanting to destroy or waste a fully functioning object) or whether the act of rendering something in miniature itself is part of the ritual process. Found at the…

A steelyard weight, possibly Roman, of lead with an iron core to probably aid in suspension. The object is bell-shaped, flared at the base but solid, the iron central section projecting at the top. A late Roman copper alloy coin of city commemorative 'VRBS ROMA' type, issued by the Emperor Constantine and his successors to commemorate the founding of the city of Rome.
