An incomplete cast lead-alloy weight of possible Roman to Medieval date, c. 43-1500 AD. The weight is conical and fairly squat, with a flat base that tapers inwards to a pointed top where there is a narrow slit, presumable originally where an iron loop or similar would have projected from (though this is now missing). Preserved in fair condition with an even whitish patina, it stands 23.98mm high and measures 31.06mm in diameter at its base. It weighs 128.58g.
Weights of this broad form underwent a long period of use, occuring in contexts from the Roman to Medieval periods. As such…

The group consists one base sherd (preserved in fresh condition with a reddish slip), three abraded body sherds (one of which demonstrates abraded 'feathered' moulded decoration) and one very abraded rim sherd. A very worn and abraded body sherd of Nene Valley colour coated ware, dating c. AD 150-400. The internal fabric is a whitish buff colour, solidly fired with no trace of inclusions.On both the inner and outer surfaces, the remains of an applied black slip are visible. Preserved in heavily abraded condition, it measures 43.22mm long down its longest axis, 9.85mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 23.17g.

Both pieces are body sherds of Nene Valley colour coated ware, demonstrating orange internal fabrics covered with black slip. An incomplete wheel-thrown ceramic fragment originating from a vessel of uncertain form (possibly a bowl) of Samian, ware, c. 43-250 AD. The sherd consists the upper shoulder of the original vessel, with the rim above broken away alongside the lower shoulder and body. It demonstrates a pinkish inner fabric, covered with a reddish orange slip. Mould-formed decoration is visible on the outer face of the sherd, which takes the form of a prominent collar underneath which is a parallel series of raised chevron motifs. It demonstrates a circular-sectioned everted rim that curves strongly in plan, suggesting that this sherd originates from a bowl or similar piece of tableware. The fabric is a brownish grey colour and extremely abraded. It survives to a maximum length of 19.98mm, 37.31mm wide, and 9.43mm thick at the midpoint of the rim. It weighs 7.33g.

An incomplete ceramic rim sherd of probable Roman date and uncertain ware type, dating c. 43-410 AD. It demonstrates a flat-topped flanged rim, the upper surface of which is decorated with three parallel wavy lines. The fabric itself is a dark brownish grey colour, being heavily gritted with frequent sandy and grog inclusions pimpling its outer surface. Preserved in somewhat abraded condition with worn breaks, it survives to a length of c. 22.49mm, 32.95mm wide, and 10.26mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 10.71g.

The body sherd is somewhat abraded and demonstrates a light buff-coloured fabric, this may represent the inner core of a piece of nene valley colour coated ware (with the slip completely worn away) though this is uncertain. A complete cast copper-alloy probable vessel mount dating to the Roman period, c. 200-300 AD. The mount is anthropomorphic and appears to depict the crowned bust of the god Sol Invictus from the shoulders up. It demonstrates an inconsistent greyish fabric, the inner portion of which is partially oxidised and thus appears mid orange colour. The rim is rounded and heavily everted, demonstrating small quartz inclusions. Preserved in somewhat worn condition, it survives to a length of 17.79mm, 54.45mm wide, and 10.07mm thick at the midpoint of the rim. It weighs 10.76g.
