A somewhat corroded copper-alloy bow brooch of the Colchester type, dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period, c. 25-60 AD. The catchplate and pin are missing, though the remainder of the brooch is preserved intact. It demonstrates a winged head (the wings short and stubby, being rectangular in section) from the rear of which projects a bent rearward facing hook. At the apex of the head is a spring chord bent forwards in the direction of the bow. An incomplete cast copper-alloy fragment originating from a bow brooch of Roman date, probably c. 43-125 AD. The fragment consists the lower bow, foot and catchplate only-the rest of the object missing in an old break. The bow itself is decorated with three raised vertical ribs, but is otherwise plain. The catchplate is triangular in plan and flattened, its back edge curved to accommodate the pin. Preserved in rather poor condition, it survives to a length of 24.21mm, 4.07mm wide at the midpoint of the bow by 9.11mm thick between the bow and catchplate. It weighs 2.11g. Due to its fra…
