A Roman to medieval die, made of ivory or bone. The die is cuboid and each value is marked by a ring-and-dot design, which range from 1 to 6. Opposite sides add up to 7. It was black when found but has now turned a dark brown. This die is Potter variant 1 (Finds Research Group 700-1700, Datasheet 23, Dice by Geoff Egan)
It measures 8.80mm (length) x 8.50mm (height) x 8.60mm (thickness) and weighs 1.49g.
Similar dice are illustrated in Crummy (1983, 96-97) which date to the Roman period and Egan et al (1998, 290-291 ref 953 and 954) which are dated to c. 1350 to 1450 AD. Therefor…

A ceramic base sherd from a Roman Samian ware vessel dating to the period c. AD 120 - 260. The sherd consists of a circular foot ring with the remains of the floor of the vessel projecting to the start of a shallow angle from the top of the foot ring and terminating in old breaks around the entire circumference. The fabric is a buff orange colour but is a bit patchy on the underside which is not fully oxidised. It is hard and exhibits frequent micaceous inclusions. The vessel has been coated in a dark orange slip which has been heavily abraded in places.

A ceramic Roman Lowther's Group 4 and Betts Die 11, relief-patterned flue-tile dating from AD 150-200. A similar tile is illustrated in Betts et al (1997:60 Fig. 27h, 11). The front is decorated with relief-patterned rolled design in the "Compass" group style. Betts et al (1997:79) write that examples of this tile "from Calverts Buildings, Southwark is associated with a masonry building constructed in 150-200 and probably demolished by the 3 or 4 cent."

A Roman pottery sherd from a vessel, a Samian decorated beaker dating to the mid 2nd - mid 3rd century possibly Rheinzabern, East Gaul. This may be from a Déchelette 72 beaker. There is a glossy dark red slip on both external and internal surfaces which is now abraded. The decoration on the beaker is moulded panel in a 'cut-glass' design, this was "Directly derived from real cut glass, this method consisted of incising the vessel and was most commonly used in East Gaul" (de la Bedoyere 1988:52)

A Roman pottery sherd from a vessel, a Samian decorated bowl dating to the second half of the 1st century by the potter Albucius. This bowl may be Dragendorff 37. There is a glossy dark red slip on both external and internal surfaces which is now heavily abraded. The decoration on the bowl is moulded panel decoration and comprises a beaded border and below that are the letters ALBV, which is part of the name ALBVCI. A complete Roman "melon" bead made from glass dating from 1st to 2nd centuryAD. The glass is heavily degraded and relains none of original colour. The bead is sub-spherical with raised ribs running along the length of the bead. The central aperture has an internal diameter of 4.22mm.
Melon beads form just under half of the total number of beads found in Castleford. Examples of faience are much more common than those of translucent blue glass. A body sherd fragment from a Roman Gaulish samian ware vessel of uncertain form dating from AD 54-96. The vessel is decorated with a moulded figure of a lion and stylized tree below which is a beaded border. This style of lion is documented on South Gaulish samian from La Graufesenque and is found on Form Dragendorff 29 & 30 and dates to the Flavian period. A similar lion can be seen in Oswald (1937:95 Pl. LX fig. 1401). Incomplete Roman bone hair pin of Crummy Type 3 and Greep Type B1.1 dating to AD150-410. The bottom of the pin shaft has been broken off and then resharpened. The head is spherical and crudely formed. The pin shaft tapers to join the head and bulges out wards as it moves away. The bone has taken on a dark brown coloured patination.
