A Roman ceramic Gaulish open oil lamp type 11Ba dating to 2nd century. The lamp has a rounded rim and vertical walls R/V. It has a flat base with a circular foot ring. The lamp has the remains of an applied double ribbed handle. The complete lamp would have been in the figure of eight shaped in plan with circular nozzle with constricted neck. The lamp is made from an oxidised red/brown terracotta ceramic. Type 11B come from a variety of sources but a higher proportion of these lamps are imported. A complete Roman, North African red slip ceramic oil lamp, type Hayes IIA dating to the 4th-5th century AD. These lamps were manufactured in factories in North Africa specifically the Carthage region. The lamp is mould made from an oxidised red terracotta ceramic which has then had a red slip applied. The lamp discus has two holes one an oil pour-hole, the other an air vent typical of this type. A Roman ceramic factory lamp type 10 or type 9 dating AD65 - 300. There is a raised border just inside the upper edge. The fabric of the lamp is buff and it has a mica dusting over the surface. Dimensions: length: 32.04 mm; width: 40.42mm; thickness: 4.51mm; weight: 13.81 g. Identification by Michael Marshall, Museum of London Archaeology. Similar example on the database is LON-643928.
