An incomplete copper alloy Roman or later furniture fitting (c. AD100-400). The object has a rounded top, with a circular cross-section, and has a spherical knop with central dimple on its apex. From the rounded top the object tapers in and out again to form a 'waist', with a step between the top and the 'waist'. There is a further step betwen the 'waist' and the foot of the fitting which is a flat, circular base. There is a circular protrusion for attachment on the underside of the base. Massive terret ring made from cast cu-alloy, with an incomplete projection of a twin spur (lipped projection) within the ring. It would also have had a strap bar concealed at the base. Most known examples come from northern England and Scotland with an emphasis in Aberdeenshire. There are also examples from North Wales. It's very close to an example from Chesters, Northumberland in Jope 2000, 309, 291e and MacGregor 1976, 113. Generally dating from late 1st-mid 3rd century AD. The coins were submitted as 9 loose coins and two clumps of coins concreted together with corrosion products. These were separated in the British Museum Conservation laboratory. Associated with the coins were seven artefacts. A fragment of a copper-alloy Trumpet brooch of Roman date, c. AD 75 - 175. The head is ovate with a double lug hinge mechanism to the reverse. The pin no longer remains. A D-sectioned bow extends from the front of the head but is much truncateed. The patina is a dark green. Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.327, fig.186 and are dated to circa AD 75 - 175.
