An incomplete copper alloy Roman hinged headstud brooch dating to the period cAD75 - 200. The brooch comprises the upper part of the bow, the head and the wings. The pin, lower bow and catchplate are all missing. The wings are cylindrical with a central slot between them for the pin and both with broken worn ends. The end of the copper alloy cross bar that runs through the wings, and the white cement to hold it in pace, is visible in the ends. An incomplete Roman copper alloy hinged strip bow brooch dating to the period c. AD 25- 70. The majority of the brooch survives although it is missing its pin and parts of its wings.
The head of the brooch is a flat sub-rectangular plate which is incomplete and has a central slot cut into the edge. The plate is slightly wider than the bow stepping out in width to form wings, only the right of which survives. Small plug or foot in Roman greyware dating to AD 43-400 with a part vitrified surface, possibly part of waster or kiln furniture but given the findspot more probably a piece with post production fire damage. The high fired fabric is a medium grey with abundant fine sand and common angular white quartz inclusions up to 1mm and occasional angular black stone inclusions up to 1mm. Roman copper alloy plate brooch in the form of a man riding a horse going left with enamel decoration dating to AD 250 to 410. The front legs and tail of the horse are missing to an old break and the back legs are slightly bent backwards but it is otherwise complete apart from the pin.
The horse has a narrow face with splayed lips and nostrils and a prominent circular eye, probably filled with green enamel. The mane is highly arched, separated from the neck by an incised line and decorated with repeated vertical incised lines to indicate the hair with a wider gap for an ear. There …
