Roman sestertius of Commodus, 31mm in diameter and weighing 21.06g. The coin is worn and damaged through secondary modification. Mint: Rome Date: 186 Reference: Roman Imperial Coinage 468a Most of the inside of the coin has been skilfully removed leaving the two faces undamaged and attached to each other along an arc of about 3mm. Within the case so created there is solid iron corrosion. This part is perhaps the corroded remains of an iron framed mirror which is attached within the bronze case by an iron pin on which it presumably pivoted allowing it to be slipped out when required.
