Object type: HOB NAIL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire

Roman iron hob nail, badly corroded. The head measures 11.6x8.9mm and stands 5mm high. The (probably square-sectioned, though obscured by corrosion) shaft survives to a length of 4.6mm. The hob nail is 9.6mm long and weighs 1.22g. Hob nails were used in Roman military footwear, boots were made from three main pieces of leather, the upper the sole and the insole, all three layers were clenched together with hobnails, frequently arranged in patterns, some which were created to facilitate compfortable walking (Bishop and Coulston 1993, 100, fig 61 ).

Probably Roman (possibly post medieval) iron hob nail, with a hemi-sperical head 9.9mm in diameter and 4.6mm thick and a bent shank. It weighs 1.72g. The shank is square in section below the head (5x5mm) which tapers in thickness over a (bent) 9.2mm to 4.7x2.3mm. The unbent length would have been c.15mm. The condition of the iron may suggest a post medieval date as it is rather good for Romano British. The hobnail is 13.8mm in complete length. Hobnails were used in Roman military footwear, boots were made from three main pieces of leather, the upper sole and the insole, all th…

Incomplete, iron spearhead, Roman in date and now in two pieces. Together, they are 139mm in length and weigh 55.43g. It is in a state of corrosion, though has maintained its shape well. The break is curious as it appears to be recent, while the worn area to either side much more ancient. At both breaks, either side has turned inwards, as though tapering to an end point. However, the two pieces clearly seem to join. The spearhead is an elongated leaf-shape - narrowing from 22mm at the widest point to 6mm at the broken tip over 99mm. The socket is circular in section with a slit up the …
