Square mount, each side 19 mm long. It has a narrow ridge across the centre, dividing it into two halves each of which is a long low semi-cylinder. At each end the semi-cylinders are closed by a vertical edge. In the centre of the reverse is an integral tapering rivet, which instead of the large integral rove commonly found on this type of mount merely has a burred-over end. The total thickness from the front to the back of the rivet is 10 mm. Probably a military fitting.

Copper-alloy pin with biconical head, missing part of shaft. The head is decorated on the upper cone; five broad radiating grooves are visible, and there may have been other motifs (e.g. dots alternating with the grooves) but corrosion makes this uncertain. The widest point of the head is flanked by two circumferential grooves, and the lower cone is undecorated. This tapers smoothly into the shaft, with no collar. The shaft then tapers gently to a very corroded point. As the length is only 35 mm it seems likely that the shaft is incomplete.

Copper-alloy handle from an iron knife. It has a thick oval terminal, attached along one of its long sides and with two small projections at the junction with the rest of the handle. The rest is a long rectangle, with a slot visible along the top and bottom with corroded iron from the tang; this is decorated identically on either face with two zones of decoration. The first, nearer the terminal, has a rectangular cut-out on either face providing a deep space for a possible inlay. The second, at the other end, consists of three broad transverse grooves which help to taper the handle…

'Propeller-shaped' mount, now bent and with a little missing. The central circular lobe is 17 mm in diameter, and has a central dot surrounded by two engraved rings. The curved edges are decorated with edge nicks. There are two flaring terminal lobes, each pierced for a rivet; one is complete and undecorated, and has bevelled edges, but the other has lost most of its edges. The central lobe and the incomplete terminal lobe are a little bent. This type of mount was used to stiffen a large belt which was probably a marker of status in the Roman army. It measures 31 mm long in its b…

Roman Republican silver denarius of Mark Antony, 32-31 BC. Mint moving with Mark Antony. Exceptionally fresh condition, suggesting that it was an import of the pre-conquest or very early post-conquest period. It certainly does not show the level of wear that most legionary denarii found in Britain do. These coins stay in circulation until the third century and normally show a degree of wear that reflects this.

'Amphora-shaped' strap-end, now incomplete. The main body of the strap-end is a flat oval plate, rounded at one end and pointed at the other. The pointed end has a little knob terminal; at the rounded end the strap-end begins to widen and is perforated, but then broken (unworn breaks). These perforations were probably decorative, and crescent-shaped; there would have been smaller attachment holes above. One face of the strap-end is decorated with neatly bevelled edges and a rather untidy longitudinal line of five ring-and-dot motifs, with another ring-and-dot to either side forming …

Hinged plate, probably from a Late Roman buckle. At one end it is 16 mm wide and has three hinge loops which retain an iron hinge bar. It then tapers unevenly, and curves a little, along its length of 35 mm. Initially the taper is concave, and there is a slight flare again before another concave taper which finishes in a rectangular end. The plate has two rivet holes, one at the rectangular attachment end and the other near the hinged end. There is decoration on one face; slightly bevelled edges, and an uneven pattern of ring-and-dot motifs. Two ring-and-dots are at the hinged en…

Half of an oval bezel from a finger-ring. It has a bevelled edge around the central setting, which is shallow and now empty. The reverse curves to fit around the finger across the short axis, and there is no trace of the hoop on the short end. The bezel must therefore have been set transversely to the hoop, with the hoop emerging from the centre of the long sides rather than from one end. It looks very Roman; although on Roman rings the bezel is usually set longitudinally to the hoop, I would rather see it as an unusual Roman bezel than one from a later ring.

Poorly preserved end-looped cosmetic mortar. It has an unsymmetrical shape, with the lowest point of its curve quite close to the loop. It appears undecorated, although there is a discoloured corroded patch on one side close to the loop which may possibly be a circular groove filled with decayed inlay, but is more probably just a corrosion bubble. The loop is broken and so are most of the edges. There is a slight knob terminal at the end opposite the loop. The finder has not cleaned the groove, but it appears to contain just soil, rather than residue from any original contents. S…

One arm from a small pair of copper-alloy tweezers. The arm flares from 3 mm wide at the slightly expanded loop to 6 mm wide at the gripping end, which is turned in at about 60 degrees. The arm is decorated with two grooves which run from the break but peter out about two-thirds of the way down. Now very bent, but original length c. 45 mm. Old break. Tweezers can be very hard to date and it is possible that these date to the Anglo-Saxon period (early, middle or late), but a good parallel has been found among the finds from Roman Colchester - Crummy 1983, no. 1883.

Fragment of narrow copper-alloy bracelet. Very slightly curved, the fragment measures just 5 mm wide and 16 mm long; both breaks are old. The decoration consists of two panels with a narrow transverse strip of undecorated metal between them. Each of the panels has the corner removed to make a triangular facet. In the centre of each panel is a ring-and-dot motif, each with two rings. The rings are wide V-shaped grooves with the inner edge vertical and the outer edge a gentle slope; the effect is more sophisticated than a simple groove would be. Roman, 3rd or 4th century.

The two rings around the dot are wide V-shaped grooves. with the inner edge vertical and the outer edge a gentle slope. Crude lead face, modelled in three dimensions. It cannot be called a head, as the reverse is slightly dished, as if to fit on the outside of a vessel. The brow has a curving ridge across it, presumably representing a hat or headband; underneath are two relief eyes and a nose. Each eye is a long lump, but the right eye has been half-removed by damage. The nose again is just a lump, and there is a depression above it. The mouth is not delineated but there is a projecting lower jaw. All over the face are smaller pits and bumps, including a particularly large one under the right eye…

Fragment of copper-alloy bracelet with one surviving terminal. For most of its 70 mm length it is 4 mm wide; it tapers for the last 25 mm to a point which has a slight hook. At the other end the break is old and neatly perpendicular to the long edges. Here there is a single ring-and-dot motif, then two transverse grooves. A longitudinal groove then runs along the centre of the bracelet, with slightly oblique nicks (forming chevrons) to either side. This pattern continues for most of the length of the fragment, the longitudinal line fading out a little before the oblique nicks end.…
