Object type: SPOON
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Handle from a Roman copper-alloy spoon, with handle offset and a very tiny stub of bowl. The handle is rectangular in cross-section, and tapers to a possible break; it is now bent as well. The wider end of the handle projects a little beyond the wide thin curved handle offset, suggesting a date late in the period; the handle offset has traces of a white-metal coating on both faces but no other decoration. A minute stub of bowl survives at the end of the handle offset.

Copper-alloy pin head and part of shaft. The head is an 11 mm diameter disc set horizontally on the shaft. The edge is decorated with transverse grooves, and the slightly convex upper surface with six grooves placed at right angles to six more grooves to form cross-hatching. The underside of the pin head tapers into the shaft, which is circular in section and 3 mm in diameter at the break. Total surviving length 11 mm.

Globular copper-alloy furniture knob (functional or decorative) with corrosion from an iron attachment shank. 16 mm in diameter, the reverse is flattened to provide a seating for the iron shank, making the copper-alloy part 14 mm thick. It is undecorated, and has corroded to a dark olive green patina which is interrupted by many pale green corrosion bubbles.

Object type: COSMETIC MORTAR
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Probable cosmetic mortar. Just over half survives, with worn and corroded edges; the metal is of even 1 mm thickness throughout and is undecorated. It is a maximum of 12.5 mm wide in the centre, and tapers to the surviving pointed end; it is a maximum of 4 mm deep, from the top of the edges to the bottom of the exterior. No loop or scar from a loop survives, so the mortar must presumably have been end-looped. The original length would have been c. 60 mm. It is very thin and shallow for a cosmetic mortar, and may have been made from sheet metal.

Object type: TWEEZERS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Complete but bent pair of tweezers made from thin copper-alloy strip. Although they look unprepossessing - almost like a piece of modern copper-alloy ribbon - both the expanded loop and the ends inturned at a slight angle can be seen. The strip flares from 4 mm wide at the loop to 5 mm wide at the ends, and is decorated with a pair of very fine longitudinal grooves. The original unbent length must have been about 50 mm. Tweezers can be difficult to date, especially when they have little decoration; these might be Roman, or alternatively early-medieval.

Object type: RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Ring made from a piece of copper-alloy strip 8 mm wide and c. 82 mm long, with the ends overlapping (but not secured) to form a circle 22-23 mm in external diameter. The ends are square-cut, and the strip flattens from 1.2 mm at the inner end to 0.8 mm at the outer end. The interior of the ring is smoothly polished and the exterior is decorated with fine, perhaps worn, engraving. At the outer overlapped end the decoration consists of oblique grooves filling one-third of the width along one long edge, and the other two-thirds filled with transverse grooves. The oblique grooves becom…

Object type: SEAL BOX
Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Tiny circular copper-alloy seal-box lid, 17 mm in diameter. It has an engraved design of an eight-petalled flower, each slender petal ending in an expanded circle. Three of the petals are filled with a silvery substance, perhaps mineralised niello (black silver sulphide). There is a small circular perforation in the centre. To one side is a single broken hinge lug. The edges are turned down to form flanges 2 mm wide. The lid has a very dark grey patina which suggests that it originally had a white-metal coating; together with the niello it would have had a smart black-and-silver …

Copper-alloy pin, missing the lower part of the shaft. The head is spherical at the top, with a concave element below, and there is then a long convex moulding with an encircling ridge at the bottom. The shaft is circular in section and very slightly bent. The pin appears to be worn, and although there are undulations on the convex moulding suggestive of decoration no clear pattern can be seen. The break is neither particularly old nor particularly fresh.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Globular copper-alloy object resembling a pin head. It is circular in cross-section, 8 mm in diameter, and 12 mm long. One tapering end is extremely corroded, but was probably originally rounded; the other tapers to a narrow off-centre point which is broken off. This could possibly have been a shaft, but at 1 mm in diameter is too narrow for a pin shaft given the size of the head. Around the circumference are six rather uneven shallow grooves.

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silver finger-ring, a plain hoop 4 mm wide with no bezel or decoration. It is 20 mm in diameter, and quite flat in cross-section; the thickness varies but is always under 1 mm. No seam is visible, but on the interior surface folds and cracks can be seen showing that it was made by hand. Such a simple ring is impossible to date precisely and could be anything from Roman to quite modern.

Copper-alloy knob or mount, probably from furniture, with the remains of an iron shank. Both parts of the knob are very corroded, but enough remains to reconstruct the copper-alloy part as a solid narrow cylinder, 6 mm in diameter at most, with a central concave moulding with a pair of flanking grooves and a rounded terminal. The other end is more mysterious as it is encrusted with a shapeless lump of iron corrosion. The total length is 20 mm, so the knob is very small.

Copper-alloy finger-ring, now incomplete; about half of the hoop survives, including the bezel with setting. The ring must have been at least 20 mm across. The breaks and almost all edges are corroded and fragmentary, but the original maximum width across the bezel was 11 mm. Three longitudinal grooves survive on one of the shoulders; the bezel area is defined by a sub-rectangular groove with the long sides bowed outwards. Just inside each short side is a slightly bowed-out transverse row of five oval dents. In the centre is the oval setting, which measures 6 x 9 mm. It is a glas…

Part of a Roman spur. One flat circular terminal survives, along with a short length of arm. The terminal is rough and looks unfinished; it is 20 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick, and has a central iron rivet. The arm is only 5 mm wide but is 3.5 mm thick. It is mostly pentagonal in section, but there is a more complicated decorative panel at its junction with the terminal. This consists of two very short rectangular-section lobes each with a transverse groove, with a flat-topped bevelled-edge area in between. The surfaces of the arm are polished smooth; the break is corroded. The …

Circular mount, now incomplete, with enamelled decoration. The mount was originally about 17 mm in diameter; it is now rather irregular, although this may be due to wear. There is a sunken dot in the centre with a sunken ring around. The sunken dot contains dark shiny enamel (possibly dark red) and the ring contains a brighter red dull enamel with two surviving inlaid white dots. On the reverse is a large integral rivet with circular rove. Just under half of the mount is missing.

Strap-slide consisting of a flat plate with a rectangular loop on the reverse. The plate is highly polished and has a nice grey-green patina. It may have been circular or oval originally, but only a very small fraction of the edge can confidently be said to be original. The current dimensions are 17.5 x 14.5 mm. The loop, although made from a chunky piece of circular-section copper-alloy rod, is rather small, measuring just 9 x 3 mm internally. There is an odd blob projecting from the outer edge of the centre of the loop which might be a casting flash. A somewhat similar object is…
