Copper-alloy conical mount, decorated to resemble a stylised lion's head. The lowest part of the cone is undecorated and slopes quite steeply; a small part is missing. The slope then changes to very gentle, and steps up to a ring which is decorated with curving engraved lines to denote the lion's mane and ears. The next element again slopes more steeply, and is decorated with oval engraved eyes each with a central drilled dot; a similar drilled dot plus two curving lines forms the mouth. The uppermost element is sub-triangular and represents the nose of the lion. In the centre is …

Copper-alloy covered-loop terret, with the remains of an iron loop. At the top is a ring, externally 22 mm diameter and internally 13 mm diameter. A short neck decorated with a horizontal groove separates this from the 'skirt' which covers the loop. This consists of two short lateral pointed projections, and larger front and back elements which both taper in an ogee curve to a knobbed terminal. Underneath is some iron corrosion which appears to indicate an iron loop running from front to back, so at right angles to the ring.

Copper-alloy button-and-loop fastener of Wild's type Vib (fasteners with plain (i.e. unenamelled) rectangular heads). Although the head was probably originally rectangular, it has now lost most if not all of its edges, and is now sub-rectangular or sub-oval and measures 25 x 16 mm x 3 mm thick. The breaks are very old and worn, and reveal a number of small holes in the metal. In the centre the head is decorated with a deep dot surrounded by a double ring. The stem emerges from the reverse of the head, turns a right-angle and then expands into a sturdy teardrop-shaped loop which is …

One end of a wide copper-alloy bracelet. The fragment tapers from 19.5 mm wide at the end to 17 mm wide at the break, and is 28 mm long with a slight curve along its length. Although it is very worn all over - including the break - some transverse decoration, probably two rows of stamping or rouletting 7 mm apart, can be seen at the end. The rest of the bracelet has two groups of three rows of similar longitudinal decoration. The reverse is undecorated. Wide bracelets of this type are early Roman and are very much rarer than the narrow late Roman bracelets. This example was incl…

Cast copper-alloy figurine, now rather corroded, in the shape of an elongated dog carrying a smaller animal in its mouth. The dog has a long straight body and neck in line with each other, a long head, short tapering legs, genitalia, and the broken stub of a tail. The body and neck are cylindrical in cross-section, varying in diameter; the body is narrowest (4-5 mm diameter) just before the junction with the back legs, widens at the shoulders, and narrows again in the middle of the thick neck. There is a distinct step between the body and the back legs; these are formed from a Ushap…

Copper-alloy button-and-loop fastener, of Wild's class VIc. The head is basically rectangular, with gently rounded sides and corners; it measures 17 x 12 mm. It has a raised border and longitudinal line along the centre, plus two raised lozenges bisected by the longitudinal line, all forming six outer and four inner triangular cells for enamel. The inner cells retain some white enamel in fairly good condition, but the enamel in the outer cells has completely decayed away. The stem projects from the reverse and then turns at a right angle; there is a lot of bubbly copper corrosion in…

Small copper-alloy face modelled in relief and with a hollow reverse. Basically lozengiform in outline, it has two rows of multi-strand curls forming the hair, with a large high-relief central curl. The eyes are made up of two curved relief lines and are deeply set under the brows. The nose, mouth and chin are small and the cheeks are rounded. The object tapers to the edges and it is very hard to tell which, if any, of the edges are complete. There is no neck. There is no obvious means of attachment. It is very hard to tell the date of this cherub-like face. Its classical feel …

The head has a helmet with large crest, a raised oval on each side, and either a substantial rim or a roll of hair beneath. The face has a worn nose and the eyes are just visible. There are no arms, and there are two V-shaped grooves on the chest. The back has three rounded facets but no other decoration. Just above the waist of the figure are two transverse ridges which run right around both front and back. Copper-alloy finger-ring, now bent a little out of shape. It is essentially D-shaped, with a flat bezel, a sharp demarcation between the bezel and the shoulders, and a smooth curve to the hoop including the shoulders. The bezel is a long hexagon, a maximum of 10 mm wide, with an oval recess in the centre measuring 8 x 9 mm, which originally held a stone or glass gem. The remains of the white adhesive used to fix the gem can be seen. There is a faint groove around the edge of the bezel. Deep V-shaped grooves then divide this from the shoulders, which are engraved with a single tran…

Unidentified copper-alloy object, perhaps the bezel from a finger-ring. It is oval and measures 15.5 x 14 mm. It is flat, 2 mm thick, with bevelled edges giving a trapezoidal cross-section. Each face has a sunken centre; the smaller face is neatly made and is presumably designed to take a setting, and the larger face is less neatly made although very flat around the edges. There are no scars anywhere around the sides, although there are some white encrustations which may be decayed solder. There are some hints of a white-metal coating around the recess on the smaller face. It is …

Bezel and shoulders from a large finger-ring of Henig's type II/III or Guiraud's type 2. The shoulders flare out unevenly; on both shoulders, the angle on one side is much steeper than the angle on the other. The hoop is 4 mm wide at the furthest break and the bezel is 12 mm wide. Both breaks are old. The bezel has an oval recess for a missing setting, and within this recess is a lot of green corrosion. Apart from this the metal is very grey, and so although it is probably made from copper alloy there can be no certainty. The surviving width across the finger-ring is 23 mm.

Bezel and shoulders from a copper-alloy finger-ring. There is a flat lozengiform bezel 12.5 mm wide, with the shoulders meeting it at an angle. At the junction of bezel and shoulders, the shoulders start slightly wider than the end of the bezel, but taper to perhaps 7 mm wide at the old breaks. The shoulders are now slightly bent; their edges are emphasised by broad grooves, but there is no groove on the bezel nor across the junction of shoulder and bezel.
