Large cast copper-alloy knob, probably from furniture, with an iron attachment shank. The knob is circular in section and shaped rather like a bottle, with a wide base 17 mm in diameter decorated with three circumferential grooves. Above the grooves it tapers to a neck 7 mm in diameter. Above this is a biconical collar, and then a rounded terminal. The knob is rather crudely cast and the base is not flat, but the length is basically 30 mm. A square-section iron attachment shank projects from the centre of the base bringing the total length up to 41.5 mm. This knob was probably a …

Globular copper-alloy furniture knob (functional or decorative) with corrosion from an iron attachment shank. 16 mm in diameter, the reverse is flattened to provide a seating for the iron shank, making the copper-alloy part 14 mm thick. It is undecorated, and has corroded to a dark olive green patina which is interrupted by many pale green corrosion bubbles.

Copper-alloy knob or mount, probably from furniture, with the remains of an iron shank. Both parts of the knob are very corroded, but enough remains to reconstruct the copper-alloy part as a solid narrow cylinder, 6 mm in diameter at most, with a central concave moulding with a pair of flanking grooves and a rounded terminal. The other end is more mysterious as it is encrusted with a shapeless lump of iron corrosion. The total length is 20 mm, so the knob is very small.

Large, heavy, solid cast copper-alloy knob, probably from furniture, with the remains of an iron attachment shank. The copper-alloy part is circular in cross-section, and flares gently from a base 20 mm in diameter to a maximum of 23 mm. From here, 11 mm above the base, it tapers more steeply to a freshly broken tip which is 7 mm in diameter. The knob is 24 mm tall. On the base is staining from the iron attachment shank. The copper alloy has a matt pale green patina. The knob may have been decorative or functional.

Heavy cast copper-alloy functional knob or decorative mount, probably from furniture. It consists of a solid hemispherical section with a flat-topped ridge around the base, sitting on a hollow, slightly flaring ring which is decorated with a broad concave moulding. The hollow inside is rough and presumably originally held an attachment device; these are normally of iron, but there is no trace of iron corrosion. Much of the surface has been removed by corrosion, but where it does survive it is glossy and grey-green. Height of mount 21 mm, maximum diameter 23.5 mm.

Cast copper-alloy decorative mount or functional knob, probably from furniture. A high dome with a collar around the base, it has a square-section hollow on the reverse which probably originally held an attachment device. These are normally made of iron, but there is no trace of iron corrosion here. The copper alloy is corroded, but the metal is a nice mid green. Height 15 mm, diameter 15 mm.

Knob handle made from copper alloy. It consists of two rounded knobs with a waist in between, one larger (10 mm diameter) and one smaller (7.5 mm diameter). From the smaller knob projects a broken attachment shank (old break). Corroded so that only a little of the surface survives, but this has a smooth olive green patina. This type of knob is known from both Roman and post-medieval furniture, but the patina of this one suggests a Roman date.

Cast copper-alloy mount with remains of iron attachment shank, a variant of the type which Allason-Jones calls 'bell-shaped'. The iron shank is now a large mass of corrosion, and protrudes from the narrower end of a slightly flaring cylinder originally 16-18 mm in diameter. There is a wide groove halfway along the cylinder dividing it into two discs. Both discs have at some time been squashed to give two straight edges and two curved edges to the cylinder. At the opposite end to the iron shank, the end of the cylinder is dished and in the centre is a large conical boss with a flat top…

Solid copper-alloy knob, perhaps from furniture, now very worn and corroded. It has a short cylindrical base, 18 mm in diameter and c. 9 mm tall, with the remains of two grooves around the outside and a dimple filled with corrosion on the underside. It then curves to a waisted area before swelling slightly to a cylinder 10 mm in diameter and c. 15 mm tall, which is decorated with two further grooves. The top may originally have been rounded, and has a central dimple. The two dimples may represent the remains of a hole through the centre of the knob; there is no trace of the usual …

Upholstery tack with tapering square-section shaft and circular hollow-domed head. The head is fairly flat on the top, perhaps as a result of hammering. Length 14 mm, maximum diameter of head 13 mm. Upholstery tacks were used in the Roman and post-medieval periods and the two can be impossible to tell apart. This example is very corroded and came from an area with many Roman finds, so may be Roman.

Upholstery tack with a tapering square-section shaft, now broken off short, and a hollow-domed head of pointed-oval shape. Length from top of head to bottom of broken shaft 7 mm, dimensions of head 21.5 x 12 mm. Upholstery tacks of this shape were used in the Roman and post-medieval periods and the two can be impossible to tell apart. This example is thick and well-made, and came from an area with many Roman finds, so may possibly be Roman.

Cast copper-alloy knob handle. It has a very short sub-square attachment shank, then a cylindrical part 14 mm in diameter decorated with three deep grooves. Beyond this is a rounded knob swelling to 19 mm diameter, with a flat top decorated with a bold ring-and-dot. The metal is smoothly worn to a mid green colour which looks old, perhaps Roman.
