The break is old and in one area corresponding to the back of the neck and head on the obverse. It accounts for a loss of about 25% of the flan. It is not clear whether the break is deliberate.

A copper-alloy Roman zoomorphic plate brooch in the shape of fabulous creature, a sea monster with two heads, of Feugère's type 29a5 (c. 2nd century AD). The creature has a curved L-shaped body and is going right with its head looking backwards. At the other end the tail loops round on itself, curving at its tip to face the head in a zoomorphic terminal. Protruding from the loop of the tail is a triangular projection. The lower part of the bow and catch-plate of a Roman copper-alloy brooch. The upper part of the bow, the head of the brooch and pin are missing due to an old, twisted irregular break. In cross-section, the bow is rectangular with rounded corners; it generally has flat upper and lower surfaces, though with a recessed channel on the lower . The bow is elongated trapezoidal and tapers gradually from the point of the break (W.: 8.5mm) to a width of 5.6mm at the foot.
