The Gobowen Roman coin hoard. The hoard was discovered on the 8th September 2019 by a metal detector user on an organised outing by the Historical Search Society Mold . The finder located a group of coins and a scatter in the ploughsoil and adhered to best practice by contacting the Finds Liaison Officers Peter Reavill and Susie White. An excavation of the hoard was undertaken by PAS staff with the finder present on the 14th September, during which a block of coins was lifted and brought to the British Museum conservation laboratory in February 2020. A near complete cast copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill type of Roman date (AD 80-120). The wings are complete with flat and pierced end caps. The axis bar, spring and pin are all lost but would have been held by both an axis bar and an external cord which is fixed to a rearward facing hook positioned at the midpoint on the upper edge of the reverse. An incomplete cast lead-alloy possible 'chess piece' style furniture fitting or mount dating to the Roman period, c. 43-410 AD. In form it takes the form of a chess pawn, with a prominently knopped head and moulded expanded mid-point (demonstrating a thickened transverse groove at its midpoint) alternating with waisted sections, all sat on a flat but broken discoidal base. An incomplete fragment comprising the lower bow and foot of a copper-alloy crossbow or P shaped brooch of later Roman date, c.AD 200-350. The pin setting, upper wings and upper bow are all lost through an old heavily abraded break. The lower half od a C-shaped curved bow survives - this is triangular in section before bending straight / at 90 degrees to form the lower foot. An incomplete Roman copper-alloy looped handle escutcheon plate attachment for a vessel (c. AD 40-410). This escutcheon is cast being convex at the front and mostly concave at the rear. Viewed from the top it is curvilinear to accommodate the body of the copper-alloy vessel, to which it would have originally been soldered.
