An excavation of the hoard was undertaken by PAS staff with the finder present on the 14th September, during which a block of coins was lifted and brought to the British Museum conservation laboratory in February 2020.

Ranging in date from AD c.270-317 the majority of coins from the group chronologically straddles the Tetrarchic period of late Roman history, from AD 294, and the midpoint in the career of the first Christian emperor Constantine the Great (AD 307-37) which would end in his achievement of absolute power over the empire.
Two types of late Roman base metal denominations are present in the Claverley deposit - both representing multiples of the classical Roman currency unit, the denarius (their precise value remains subject to debate). The first coin type is the late third century radia…

The majority (16) of the coins are of a denomination commonly known as the nummus, produced from the reign of Constantine I (AD 306-337) and that of his sons; the earliest of these is thought to date to the period AD 318-330 but it is very worn and cannot be identified with certainty. Brief description of Knockin Hoard
The hoard consists of twenty two Roman coins. They were found over a small area and probably represent a hoard that has been dispersed by ploughing. I have been informed that there were no associated finds (such as pottery or other metalwork) which would suggest that they were deposited in an organic (wood or leather) container that has since decayed. The find-spot of the hoard is close to the modern A5 which follows the route of a known Roman road. The condition of the coins is variable; several have been broken (probably through agricultural pro…

Summary of the Shrewsbury hoard
18 radiates and 9297 nummi to AD 335
The 9,315 coins were contained in a broken 'Severn Valley' ware jar. The subsequent archaeological excavation recovered a scatter of coins in the immediate area and some associated pottery sherds (from the jar). The pot had originally been placed in a pit and was covered by a large flat stone.
The majority of the coins present were nummi minted between AD 307 and 335. Eighteen radiates were also present. The latest dated coins in the hoard can be dated to AD 333-335. The internal stratigraphy of the pot sugg…
