The measurements of the tesserae are as follows: 1. 26.53mm in length, 14.60mm wide & 14.95mm thick. It weighs 12.06 grams. 2. 20.96mm in length, 18.25mm wide & 14.89mm thick. Object type: FIGURINE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Carved soapstone bovine (Ox or Cow) figurine of Roman date (100-350 AD). The figurine is naturalistic in style and incomplete having three broken legs; two of which were discovered close to the find. The carving has been achieved from a combination of whittling and carving, probably using a knife. Although some of the elements are stylised in design the overall impression of the figure is life-like and well proportioned. In shape the body of the ox is sub-rectangular from which extends the horned head and four sub-rectangular D shaped cross sectioned feet. The head is triangular in sh…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: County of Herefordshire

Regular mud-stone nodule used and shaped into a brick (ceramic building material) of probable Roman date (100-350 AD). The nodule is a similar size to the other examples (HESH-EA0F18 ) and found at the same site. It is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. It is formed from a fine grained silt or mud stone which is mica rich. It is a uniform grey colour with a slightly powdery surface. There is evidence of mortar or other similar compound on both the upper and lower faces of the nodule suggesting it had been used in a wall or building. The mortar has decayed to a mid-…

Carved (chipped and gound) whetstone or pestle of probable Roman to Post-Medieval date (100 - 1650 AD). The pestle or whetstone is formed from a piece of sandstone. It is sub cylindrical in shape and is 43.7mm in length, 28.4mm width and is 37.4mm thick. It weighs 89.01 grams. There is some debate as to whether this artefact is a pestle or a whetstone as the end is ground smooth (the other is broken) but the sides seem to be sligtly faceted. This faceting might have been caused by the edges being ground into its orginal form. However, they might also be a result of wear through…
