An incomplete cast copper-alloy 'Door Knob' spear butt of Roman or Early Medieval date, c. 200-300 AD or 500-600 AD. The object consists of a hollow sub-conical butt-end with a sub-circular rim, which tapers into a hollow open-ended cylindrical shaft which has a broken terminal. In profile the butt has straight walls until it flares out forming a bulbous base with rounded sides and a slightly flattened base which is damaged on the rim. The flan on which the coin is struck coin measures 2.1 mm, this is perhaps thicker than regular examples. (RRC (1974:p.390) no. 374.2. The issue was produced by Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius, serving as a Sullan commander in the fight against Carrinas, Norbanus and Carbo. The reverse type may have a Sullan as well as a family significance (RRC 1974).

All that remains of the brooch is the head of the brooch which is circular in plan with an integral loop and the mid section of the bow. The foot terminates in a broken and rounded point. There is no evidence of the catch plate or foot of the brooch.
