An umbonate plate brooch, of Roman dating (100 - 250 AD). The brooch is sub circular in plan, with three incomplete projecting knops protruding from the edge. The body of the brooch is domed in profile and this is decorated with a central circular cell surrounded by two concentric rings of triangular cells which originally would have held enamel. A fragment of a copper alloy, Roman bow brooch probably of Polden Hill type (c.AD75-AD175) or possibly a Trumpet brooch (c.AD75-AD175). The fragment is sub oval in plan. Due to its fragmentary nature it is problematic to assign a firm classification. It is broken at the head, therefore the spring, bow, pin, foot and catch plate are missing. Iron staining indicates the former position of the spring on the largest flat surface of the fragment. The object has a dark green patina. The fragment measures 16.6 mm in length, 11 mm in width and weighs 4.8 grams.
