An incomplete fragment from the head and upper bow of a cast copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch dating from AD 75 - 175. The fragment of the brooch is distorted with the bow being further bent and distorted - probably deliberately in antiquity. The head of the brooch is oval in plan. The reverse of it is divided by a vertical rectangular bar which is pierced at the mid-point. It is through this hole that the spring / pin would have been fixed. Both the pin and spring are lost. An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands) brooch, Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b. Plate 46, of Roman date (AD80-120). An incomplete late Roman/ Early-Medieval (AD 400-600) penannular brooch of Fowler's Type D and Booth's type D2. The frame is sub-circular, and oval in cross-section. The pin is missing. The brooch is made from a single cylindrical piece of copper alloy that has been bent into a circle, with the outer edges bent back to form terminals lying flat against the frame. The top edge is stepped and is perforated with a copper pin that passes through the perforation rather than the pin being rolled in situ.
