Copper alloy mount. Cast markedly concavo-convex hollow mask in the form of a maned lion’s head. The nose and jowls are naturalistically rendered, the eyes are represented by protruding oval panels and an oval aperture – whether arising from mis-casting, damage or design – is an open oval hole. The former option is perhaps most likely as another gap appears at the top of the head. An outwardly bevelled rim represents the mane. Possibly from furniture or from a container used to contain a cremation. The lion was persistently linked with death in the Mediterranean world…

Copper alloy mount. Cast concavo-convex figurative mount representing the naturalistically rendered maned mask of a lion. A tousled mane surrounds a feline face with rounded features, round eyes and small ears, with a ‘beard’ below the mouth. The eyes are round with pupils modelled – one brow is lowered, though the slightly quizzical effect might be the result of a minor abrasion rather than imaginative modelling. Extensive traces of white metal plating are trapped in the modelled detail of the display side. The back is hollowed and rounded, though the casting still a…

Copper alloy mount. Cast oval concavo-convex boss with a cylindrical socket of height 5mm projecting from the middle of its hollow back. Surface markings, probably incised lines, may contribute to an anthropomorphic mask of a bearded face, perhaps representing Silenus; rounded central areas modelled in low relief may represent a nose, lips or other facial features; though which way up is uncertain. Now lightly squashed or crimped, perhaps from an originally round form, with a sub-triangular hole or casting flaw. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Length: 23.9mm, Width: 16.4mm…

Copper alloy mount. Cast straight-sided slightly concavo-convex plate with rounded and collared ends. One end bears a drilled hole of diameter 5mm above a simple collar. The other end expands slightly at a first collar, and is constricted at a second, with a rounded end conferring a vaguely phallic appearance. A drilled hole of diameter 1mm here may be a fixing point. White metal plating remains on much of the convex display side. Copper alloy mount. Cast three-dimensional model of a swimming water bird, with a lentoid basal hollow retaining rust or fixative. The bird is modelled with its wings folded against its back, the feathers being indicated by finely-spaced diagonally incised strokes. The neck is erect with a damaged head with a drilled pit for the one remaining eye of diameter 2mm; a short bill is also truncated. The swimming duck design appears on plate brooches as a motif especially popular in the Humber region, but also on vessel mounts. The hollow base may show where this was fixed to a vessel rim. …

Copper alloy and iron mount, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast concavo-convex discoid object with a dense rust concretion in the middle; exposed behind and perhaps extruded onto the front. A buff deposit, stained by corrosion products, appears within the hollow back. The massy wall and the use in close combination of iron and copper alloy may both be features pointing to a Roman date. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 19.9mm, Height (i.e. protrusion): 8.6mm, Thickness (wall): 2.5mm, Weight: 8.02gms

Copper alloy mount. Cast figurative mount with an integrally cast conical fixing pin of diameter 3.1mm and length 5.5mm projecting from behind; the back of this massy casting is lightly hollowed. The subject is the profile of an old man with bald forehead, with hair at the back of the head and extending from there to form a long and luxuriant beard, though perhaps without a moustache of similar character. A crumbly pale green material covers part of the back, and might be a relict fixative. The subject may be Silenus, an attendant of Bacchus. While the fixing method would normally com…

Copper alloy mount. Cast bar of plano-convex D-section with four ribs and three broad grooves between them. A pair of integrally cast fixing pins of length 5.8mm and shank diameter 3.2mm project from the back; their burred ends suggest the object as attached to leather. Copper alloy mount. Cast trapezoid plate with a central oval concavo-convex vulvate boss with longitudinal central crease – the effect is not unlike a miniature shield. A pair of integral cylindrical fixing pines of diameter 3.5mm and length 4.1mm with burred ends project from the back, and probably indicate this was attached to leather. The fastening at least is typical of 3rd-century military harness fittings. Copper alloy mount. Cast concavo-convex discoid mount with a stepped front of four orders: a wide plain basal part, a step with close-spaced radial lines in a left hand spiral, a further bevelled step with stamped features resembling an oval ring and dot, and an apical triangular boss with further close-spaced wavy lines on its surface. These last resemble the marginal stamped decoration of later Roman plate brooches. A slot of length 6mm appears behind the apex in the hollow back, presumably to receive a separate fixing pin. Glossed, perhaps by recent cleaning. The ring and dot may h…
