Probably black glass bead. A small biconvex bead with a central moulded stringing hole of diameter 3.3mm, and with a collar on one side of the hole, of Guido’s form 12 (page 92, fig. 37). The good condition may point to a soda glass, the typical Roman recipe which enjoys better long term survival than the later forms of glass. The bead may have been intended to be dark blue, which was common for beads in pre-Roman, Roman and post-Roman times. Against this suggestion, no hint of blue tint is discernible under either reflected or transmitted light. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410

Blue glass melon bead fragment. Mid blue semi-translucent glass bead fragment, from a bead of gadrooned or ribbed moulded form with a stringing hole of diameter in excess of 4mm. The form suggests a Roman date, albeit other objects reported from the vicinity may hint at local glass-working in the Roman period, and perhaps before. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410

Greenish colourless cylindrcal glass bead. The bead is flattened on one side and has a projecting ‘tail’ where the newly made bead was separated from a larger strand. A central stringing hole of diameter 2.8mm appears.
This object may indicate the local manufacture of glass beads. Suggested date: AD 43-410

Glass bead fragment. Moulded internally translucent cobalt blue glass bead fragment, discoid, of rounded profile, with a central moulded aperture of 15mm diameter. Broken with the loss of half the bead; one side of what remains is chipped. The outer surface is rough and the effect correspondingly opaque, probably from casting in a bed of fine sand. The aperture is too large to admit identification as a spindle whorl of this period. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410

Glass bracelet fragment. D-section band of blue-tinted clear translucent glass with an apical crest of mid blue glass with thin white diagonal strands symmetrically arranged along it. Longitudinal lines appear within the metal, possibly pointing to wound construction around a former. The use of blue glass leaves a broad date range available, as glass beads of this tint accompany pre-Roman and Roman-period native burials in East Yorkshire. Suggested date: Early Roman, 43-200

Blue-green opaque glass bead fragment. A fragment from a cylindrical glass bead with a longitudinal stringing hole of diameter 2mm, broken at both ends and along one side. The type was cut from cylindrical rods and probably has early Roman origins, but enjoyed particular popularity through the later Roman period, and much reuse thereafter (Guido 1978, page 95, fig. 37 nos 4 and 5). Suggested date: Late Roman, 300-410

Powder-blue opaque possible glass bead fragment. A large gadrooned or vertically ribbed melon bead with a central moulded aperture of diameter in excess of 11mm, and with a flat rim at either side. This oversized stringing hole would have complicated the stringing of this object with other beads of more conventional sizes. A function as a toggle to fasten a belt or girdle might also be entertained - the aperture is over-sized for this to have been an early spindle whorl. The finder kindly suggests an Anglo-Saxon date. While such an object might be reused at that time, the form is Earl…

Glass bead of hexagonal type. A sub-cylindrical opaque glossy green glass bead with five longitudinal facets and rounded ends, with a stringing hole of diameter 2.8mm. There are paler green longitudinal stripes, some angled slightly suggesting a twisting motion was employed during the making of the bead. The excellent surface condition may suggest a soda glass recipe of Roman type. Similar beads occur on necklaces from burials at Lankhills, Winchester, Hampshire, and from Fordington, Dorchester, Dorset (Guido1978, plate IV a and b; Guido Roman form 8 on fig. 37). Semi-translucent white [i.e. colourless] glass with a greenish tint, probable a vessel fragment. A small fragment of thin [1.7mm] glass with smoothed broken edges on three sides and a slightly rougher broken edge on the other. The fragment is slightly concavo-convex in profile, which prompts the identification offered. The outer or convex surface bears a light and open furrowing which does not find any reflection on the other side. Abraded. A fragment of window glass in better condition, and of identical thickness, was reported along with this object. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.

White [i.e. colourless] translucent bubble glass with a greenish tint and slight iridescence mainly on one side, possibly window glass. A thin [1.7mm] flat form with one straight made edge which is slightly curled or lipped during its manufacture might suggest this to be from a small pane from a window. The good condition tends to argue against a medieval date as the 'forest glass' of that period usually deteriorates to a darkened crumbly friable texture whereas this is solid, probably a soda glass made to a Roman recipe. Evidence for glazing at any period before the later post-mediev…

Glass bead fragment. Globular bead of opaque sky blue glass with a stringing hole of diameter 2.7mm. The surface of the stringing hole is rough, and some tiny bubbles or spots appear on the broken surface. This may be a Roman bead, though a Victorian taste for sky blue beads attached to lace bobbins should also be remembered. The irregularity of the internal surface prompts the suggestion that this may belong to the earlier period. Suggested date: probably Roman, 43-410.

White [colourless] glass of greenish tint, vial fragment. Blown vessel with a wide flat everted rim of estimated diameter 25mm springing at right angles from a narrow neck of diameter 12.7mm. A series of light nicks appears all around the outer edge of the rim. Bubbles trapped in the metal may suggest this to be a pre-industrial product, while its clarity and good preservation suggest this to be soda glass made according to the Roman recipe; the form would be apt to a perfume bottle. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.

Glass bead. Moulded translucent cobalt blue biconical bead; Guido (1978, page 97 fig. 37) referred to this form as her small biconical bead ; this example is at the large end of the size range she offers. One side of the bead protrudes more markedly than the other. The cylindrical aperture is 2.2mm in diameter. These are more usually Late Roman, but are known from Britain throughout the Roman period. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.

Sky blue opaque glass with pale internal layering, bead fragment, suggesting an originally spherical form; it is uncertain whether a pit in its fracture surface is related to its perforation or to later heating or damage. The colour is bright but the finish matt. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410.

Opaque sky blue glass bead. Barrel shaped bead of slightly tapered form with a central aperture of diameter circa 3mm. The weathered surface appears to show faint turning lines below a light frosting of surface weathering. Pale blue beads of faience are known from Egyptian contexts, and these continued to be made into the Roman period; some survived to be reused in later times. Part of a group which may indicate the disturbance of furnished burials of Later Roman or Early Anglo-Saxon date. The sky blue tint was also popular in Victorian times, but the surface weathering and irregulari…
